Winning a Grand Slam event can kick-start an amateur’s career, while elevating a great player to a legend of the sport. A Grand Slam can be achieved if all four majors are won in the same calendar year. Eight men and 10 women have won career Grand Slams, with only five men and six women to do it in the open era.
The Australian Open is the first major of each calendar year, held at Melbourne Park over the last fortnight of January each year, with the male winner presented with the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup, and the female winner the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. The fourth piece to the Grand Slam puzzle, the US Open starts on the last Monday of August and lasts for two weeks, with the middle weekend coinciding with the US Labor Day holiday. Played on a hard court, the modern version of the tournament, contested at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows, New York, is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world.

The Davis Cup is the World Cup of tennis in the men’s version of the game, with an annual knock-out format tournament for those countries that qualify. The tournament is named after former American tennis player and founder, Dwight F. Davis with International Tennis Federation nations invited to qualify for the event. Spain are the current champions, winning their sixth title, while the United States hold the most titles with 32.
