Wigan 5/4 to sweep past FA Cup foes Millwall on their latest spring surge

Published:

Wigan are currently a fistful of winless league games from joining Millwall in the second tier and this Saturday they will get to see just how they measure up to the rigours of football at that level. However, the Latics’ springtime surge is coming to the boil and Millwall struggling in the Championship of late the 5/4 about Wigan winning in 90 minutes looks generous.

Reaching the FA Cup final would mark a new high on the trajectory of Wigan’s Athletic’s rise from the Northern Premier League (now the Unibond League) to the Premier League and with several members of the club’s support staff having been there at the genesis of their story, the importance of reaching the final at Wembley will not be lost on their players. Indeed with the FA Cup likely to occupy so much Wigan head-space, the 15/8 about them to be relegated this term may be a price worth taking now.

Wigan arrive at their date with destiny on a confidence-inspiring run of five wins in their last seven games that was kick started by the 4-1 FA Cup riot against Huddersfield.

Ivorian hitman Arouna Kone has been the grateful recipient of the chances their upturn in form has afforded, bagging six goals in his last seven appearances and Coral go 5/4 about him registering at any time in Saturday’s fixture. With his last two goals coming after the 80th minute the 5/1 about the striker scoring last also makes some appeal.

Millwall’s form has been something of a mixed bag with two wins, two draws and a loss since the win over Blackburn Rovers that got them here, but the Lions will surely benefit from playing somewhere other than the New Den. They’ve gone six games without a win in front of their own fans and the five wins they’ve garnered from their last seven away matches suggest they may play with more freedom away from the pressure of their own support.

Unfortunately for the Lions their fans are expected to outnumber Wigan supporters by three to two at Wembley, with the North West outfit yet to sell some 10,000 tickets of their allocation.

Ultimately it maybe Millwall’s lack of goal-threat that undermines their bid for a second FA Cup final of the millennium as Kenny Jackett’s outfit have notched more than a single goal just once in their last nine games. That they score less than 0.5 goals can be backed at 6/4 and given Wigan have kept three clean sheets in their last six outings the Latics’ win to nil is 21/10.
