Andrew Todos’ Ukraine v Austria preview: Heorhiy Bushchan will be key to Ukrainian hopes
Our Matchday Squad journalist will be covering Ukraine throughout Euro 2020
Ukraine need a draw against Austria to secure second place in Group C. The rivals are level on points but as Ukraine have scored more, they have the edge in the table. As such, expect a highly cagey affair, with a much larger focus on defence.
The unmistakable player to highlight going into this final group game is goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushchan. He redeemed himself with a very assured display against the North Macedonians and was unlucky to concede after saving Alioski’s penalty. His alertness and shot stopping will be crucial to ensure Ukraine keep out the physical Austrian forwards and prevent defeat in Bucharest.
Shevchenko’s side have been keeping to their manager’s tactical principles so far this tournament, by attempting to play on the front foot and building up from the back. However, as shutting out Austria is more imperative than attempting to score in this game; it can be anticipated that Ukraine will play much more cautiously. They’ll be soaking up pressure and playing on the break.
No new issues bar Oleksandr Zubkov, who is still a doubt for the final match after being injured on MD1. Ukraine have broken their Euros hoodoo. They’ll be looking to avoid defeat to ensure a first-ever knockout place. Should be a very close game. 1-1.
