Preview and odds for Tuesday’s match

Hungary have a daunting task ahead of them at the European Championship and complete their preparations for meeting three of the world’s best teams by facing the Republic of Ireland in Budapest.

The Magyars are in the ‘group of death’ along with France, Germany and Portugal so will be keen to conserve their energy levels while Stephen Kenny’s Irish side are looking for back-to-back wins after finally getting off the mark.

Tuesday’s match is live on Sky Sports and kicks off at 7pm as we highlight a few potential Hungary v Republic of Ireland betting tips.

Hungary v Republic of Ireland match odds

Hungary will be keen to head into Euro 2020 with plenty of confidence and are 29/20 favourites to sign off with a victory.

They are in good form having gone 10 matches unbeaten since a 3-2 defeat at home to Russia in the Nations League in September.

There have been seven wins during that run, with the most recent being a 1-0 victory at home to Cyprus on Friday thanks to a 36th-minute goal from Andras Schafer.

Peter Gulacsi, Hungary

Ireland are 11/5 to come out on top and maintain the momentum started by a 4-1 win against Andorra on Thursday to finally hand Kenny victory at the 12th attempt.

Tottenham striker Troy Parrott cancelled out Marc Vales’ shock 52nd-minute opener with a sweet strike and then powered home a header to restore order with Jason Knight and substitute Daryl Horgan wrapping up the 4-1 win.

Kenny’s men failed to muster a single attempt on target in a frustrating first half, though, and Hungary are 16/5 to be leading at both half-time and full-time.

Hungary v Republic of Ireland head-to-head

These are usually two well-matched teams and four of their previous eight meetings have been drawn, with 19/10 on offer for another draw here.

The last encounter was also a friendly in June 2012 which ended goalless and a 0-0 draw can be backed at 5/1.

Previous XI

Hungary vs Republic of Ireland - Football tactics and formations
Hungary: Gulacsi, Lang, Szalai, Varga, Botka, Schafer, Lovrencsics, Kleinheisler, Siger, Holender, Hahn.

Republic of Ireland: Bazunu, Doherty, Egan, McClean, O’Shea, Cullen, Hourihane, Knight, Curtis, Parrott, Collins.

Key battles

Hungary captain Adam Szalai is the biggest threat for the Irish defence to deal with.

He has been less of a goal threat during the last two seasons back at Bundesliga side Mainz, where he began his career, but has previously done well at Schalke and Hoffenheim.

Szalai scored in back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Poland and San Marino in March and is 5/1 to open the scoring here.

Parrott is 7/2 to again be on target for Ireland while this will be another interesting test for 19-year-old goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who has spent the season on loan at Rochdale from Manchester City.
