Euro 2020 Group D odds

England renew some familiar rivalries and will know plenty about all their opponents in an intriguing Group D at the European Championship.

England were knocked out by Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals three years ago, were in the same qualifying group as the Czech Republic and need no introductions to their rivals from north of the border Scotland.

Gareth Southgate’s men have the advantage of playing all their group games at Wembley but the Three Lions were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in their opening match when hosting Euro 96.

They thrashed the Czech Republic here 5-0 in March 2019, with Raheem Sterling scoring a hat-trick, but the Czechs got revenge with a 2-1 victory in Prague seven months later on their way to finishing runners-up in the group.

That was the only time England dropped points and they are off to a perfect start in World Cup qualifying with three wins out of three, a record which they are 13/8 to repeat here.

The odds suggest Scotland will have a much tougher time getting out of the group. Steve Clarke’s team are 11/1 to win the group – as are the Czech Republic – and 10/11 to qualify for the knockout stage but they are a similar price, at evens, to finish bottom.

John McGinn, Scotland

This is their first appearance at a major tournament since 1998 and the likes of Colin Hendry and Gary McAllister may want to avoid their televisions during the build-up to facing England at Wembley in a European Championship.

Croatia are 10/3 to top the group and again get the better of England, who they have met twice since the World Cup with a goalless draw in Croatia followed by a 2-1 win for England at Wembley in the Nations League.

Croatia have a good record of stepping up a gear at major tournaments but the 12-month delay will not have helped an ageing squad.
