There is something very apt about Switzerland’s final group match of the tournament taking place in Azerbaijan.

For one, they are back where they started against Wales. Secondly, this place is called the Land of Fire, and the Swiss are certainly feeling the heat ahead of a match with Turkey that will make-or-break their qualification ambitions.

Switzerland’s performances so far at UEFA’s summertime ball have been far from the required standard expected. The 1-1 draw with Wales was concerning as they failed to see out a game they had controlled but the manner of their 3-0 loss to Italy on Wednesday was simply chastening. An unfamiliar performance that lacked energy and desire as they suffered their heaviest-ever defeat since Vladimir Petkovic took the reins in 2014.

However, all is not yet lost. A response is needed and a Turkey side fresh from two straight defeats could provide the perfect tonic. This group of players are capable and stars like Xherdan Shaqiri are still to make their mark like we know they can. I predict a fierce response from a side that simply can’t afford anything less. 3-0 Switzerland.
