Spain will be hoping to go all the way and claim a third European title in four tournaments but first they must get through a group which also contains Poland, Sweden and Slovakia.
La Roja have flopped at recent tournaments, progressing to the knockout stage but losing to Italy at Euro 2016 and then crashing out to hosts Russia at the last World Cup.
Their unbeaten record in qualifying bodes well at least and Luis Enrique is back in charge, having resigned during that campaign due to the death of his daughter.
His bold squad selection has resulted in the unusual prospect of no Real Madrid players being on duty for Spain, with Sergio Ramos the most notable omission.
They have not exactly made an inspiring start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, drawing at home to Greece before narrow wins against Georgia and Kosovo, but November’s 6-0 thrashing of Germany in the Nations League showed what they are capable of on their day.
Their biggest threat, according to the Group E betting odds, is Poland who are 5/1 to top the group.
The Poles have one of the best strikers in the world in Robert Lewandowski after his record-breaking goal feats in the Bundesliga this season but he has never reproduced his club form at a major international tournament.
Sweden had been boosted by Zlatan Ibrahimovic coming out of international retirement but an injury late in the season while playing for AC Milan means he will be missing, although they got to the quarter-finals of the World Cup three years ago without him.
The Scandinavians are 6/1 to top the group, 4/9 to qualify and 15/8 to finish as runners-up behind Spain.
Slovakia are appearing at their second European Championship and are the 12/1 outsiders. Odds of 5/4 are available for them to get out of the group, just as they did five years ago when they beat Russia and drew with England.
