Craig King’s Switzerland v Spain preview: Switzerland will have nothing to fear

Our Matchday Squad journalist will be covering Switzerland throughout Euro 2020

It was beginning to seem like it would never happen for Switzerland but in the hardest challenge of them all, they produced a magical display to stun France and reach a tournament quarter-final for the first time in 67 years.

This victory was neither lucky nor by accident. This team has the potential and is capable of matching the best, but there weren’t many who would’ve anticipated such a display or progression. The desire and attitude, especially to come from behind is not an attribute often seen in this side either.

Perhaps it was also just meant to be. On the night that Vladimir Petkovic matched Karl Rappan for most matches as manager of the national team with 77, he also became the first to lead Switzerland to a quarter-final since Rappan back in 1954.

This transcontinental journey now moves on to St. Petersburg for a match with Spain. The suspended Granit Xhaka will be a huge miss, but no other changes are expected in Petkovic’s tactics or approach. Whatever happens next, Switzerland have achieved their goal, but they now have nothing to fear and have the belief they can cause another upset and at this point, anything can happen.
