Red Devils dangerous when down

The Friday evening FA Cup fourth round rumble between Derby County and Manchester United has caused a cross-country train kerfuffle among travelling fans, so Red Devils support will be expecting a deadly display upon arrival at Pride Park.

Louis van Gaal is under pressure, but last time the Dutchman looked destined for an Old Trafford exit, Man Utd went on a run of five games in all competitions unbeaten. So, the Rams should beware a rampage from the Red Devils after their defeat to Southampton, with the Mancunian club odds-on 19/20 favourites with Coral for victory in Derbyshire.

Ambitious County coach Paul Clement even went as far as to suggest sinking United may not count as a giant-killing anymore, as he told press: “I’m not sure it will quite be a giant-killing if we get a good result on Friday but it will be an upset, and we all know there has been lots of those over the years in the FA Cup.”

There certainly have been an abundance of upset apple carts, but the Rams’ record against the Red Devils suggests they may have a tougher time than anticipated. Last time these two met in the FA Cup, Derby were dispatched 4-1, while Man Utd have scored 20 in their last seven duels against this opposition.

Such history could be just the spark needed to ignite the Old Trafford outfit’s attack, with Van Gaal’s guys rated 4/1 to score three or more.

Derby dangers not without merit

The Rams threat is still significant, though their form has dropped slightly since going on an undefeated run from the end of November to December.

Still, at Pride Park, the hosts can prove prickly for anyone and memorably forced one draw and one victory in two of their past three frays with Man Utd on home turf. So, if you fancy a dark horse or, erm, Ram, Clement and co are 3/1 for a shock win.

Preparing to lead the charge for Derby will likely be dangerman Tom Ince, whose father Paul (pictured below) was famously once a Red Devil, and potent marksman Chris Martin, with both intriguing 15/8 punts in the anytime market.

Rooney to rage against Rams? Or young-guns to run riot?

Man Utd skipper Wayne Rooney has shrugged off criticism this campaign and resumed his race to beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s top scorer record. The England captain has struck five in five, and Van Gaal must bring out his big-guns here, so backing Rooney at 5/1 to open the scoring looks smart.

While, much talk has centered around relying on more of the Premier League giants’ young-guns, with France forward Anthony Martial (5/1 to have the final say), academy product Jesse Lingard (2/1 to notch anytime), attacking midfielder Andreas Pereira (7/2) and recently returned playmaker Adnan Januzaj (7/2) all more than capable of producing moments of magic.
