Alan Shearer’s England v Denmark preview: “We have to trust Gareth Southgate – he’s got all the big calls right so far”
Published:Former England captain Alan Shearer will be covering the Three Lions as part of our Matchday Squad throughout Euro 2020
I cannot wait for England v Denmark on Wednesday night. Wembley will be buzzing, the atmosphere will be electric, and this England team will be full of confidence, having not conceded a goal in the tournament so far, and scoring four against Ukraine – and it could have been more – in their last match.
Whoever Gareth Southgate starts with, he has shown throughout this tournament that all the big decisions he’s made, he’s got right. He’s got so much attacking strength particularly at his disposal, and we have to trust him to make the right call again.
As for Denmark, they obviously had a very tough start to this tournament. What happened to Christian Eriksen was a shock to us all, but particularly to his Danish team-mates and fans. However, they have recovered brilliantly, and have shown great resilience and togetherness to firstly get out of the group stage, and then progress to the last four.
They will undoubtedly make it tough for England, but Gareth has those forward options to call upon, he can bring on talented players when the opposition will be starting to tire, and I fully expect a home win on Wednesday, with England booking their place in Sunday’s final.
