Die Wolfe on the hunt again
The Bundesliga kicks off this weekend with a lot of talking points from top to bottom.
Bayern Munich will be the team to beat, but are about to embark on a new dawn under new boss Niko Kovac.
Wolfsburg fought off relegation for the second season in a row to secure their top-flight status thanks to the leadership of Max Arnold.
But after losing Mario Gomez, the 2009 Bundesliga champions won’t want to be languishing at the bottom of the league yet again.
The Coral News Team take a look at why Die Wolfe could come roaring back this season.
Fresh strike-force
With the loss of Daniel Didavi and Gomez to Stuttgart in recent times there will be a heavy reliance on the two new signings.
They’ve acquired the bustling Daniel Ginczek and former AZ Alkmaar striker Wout Weghorst.
The Dutch striker plundered an impressive 18 goals in 31 goals last campaign as AZ finished up third.
This is a big snare from Wolfsburg which proves they still hold some pull when it comes to competing for the next break-out star.
Ginczek will be familiar to Bundesliga fans after his move from Stuttgart. He told Bild that he feels, at 27-years-old, that his best years are still ahead of him.
The duo will have to hit the ground running to get the feel-good factor back at the Volkswagen Arena.
Malli and Mehmedi must come good
Yunus Malli and Admir Mehmedi were two of the most distinguished signings brought into the club last year.
However, neither player really came to the party for the most part of the season.
Mehmedi was signed from Bayer Leverkusen. And despite scoring one and assisting another in his first two starts he found himself on the bench for much of the season only notching two more goals.
The 27-year-old then missed the last ten games with a torn ligament.
Malli made 31 appearances last campaign and did score an important third goal in the relegation play-off against Holstein Kiel.
He bagged six goals and supplied another six assists for Mainz before his move in January 2017. But Malli hasn’t been able to provide enough killer contributions in the clubs famous colours.
Nurturing youth
New Sporting director Jorg Schmadtke may be looking for the next wave of young talent. But the club already have some exciting youngsters on their books.
They’d already signed Paul-Georges Ntep, Riechedly Bazoer and former Arsenal man Kaylen Hinds in an attempt to nurture a new generation.
Ntep will be returning from an unproductive spell back in Ligue 1 and will want to prove his doubters wrong.
Bazoer featured more. But after returning from his loan spell early to help save the club from relegation, the Croatian midfielder Josip Brekalo is who the fans may pin their hopes on this season.
