Odds and preview ahead of Golf’s centre-piece
The 2018 Ryder Cup gets underway at Le Golf National in France this weekend with a host of big names spread across both teams.
The last time the Americans won the tournament in Europe, star player Jordan Spieth was in nappies.
Team USA did win in Minnesota in 2016 and are 4/5 to score the victory. Europe led by captain Thomas Bjorn are 5/4 to lift the trophy.
And with the draw at 12/1, The Coral News Team take a look at which players could be pivotal in swinging the result either way…
Team Europe
Rory McIlroy has had to deal with being European golf’s enduring talisman for over half a decade now.
The 29-year-old is 5/1 to be Europe’s top point-scorer and if he can start well you may begin to hear the crowd roar.
If McIlroy can be a maverick at times, then Francesco Molinari will be the calming influence on the team.
This has arguably been Molinari’s most impressive year to date, winning two PGA tour gongs as well as The Open in July.
He may have only held world number-one status for a single tournament but Justin Rose has turned his promise into genuine world-class performances.
Rose already had an Olympic Gold and a US Open to his name before a solid 2018 saw him sit top of the pack.
The Englishman is 66/1 to score 4 or more points and bag a hole in one.
Team USA
Tiger Woods has hit form at the best time to force his way into the Ryder Cup reckoning.
Before his Tour Championship win last week, he hadn’t won a tournament in five years.
Woods is sure to be the star attraction all weekend and is 3/1 to be the Top Wildcard of the tournament.
Brooks Koepka was named PGA of America’s Player of the Year earlier this week after winning both the US Open and PGA Championship last summer.
Koepka was a huge part of the U.S victory in at Hazeltine in 2016, going 3-1-0 in his Ryder Cup.
He’s 6/1 to be his team’s top scorer and if he can replicate that form, then we could see history made.
World-number one Dustin Johnson will hope to put his previous disappointing Ryder Cup performances behind in France.
Johnson lost two of his three four-ball matches in 2016, but despite only winning one major to date, there is little question of his class.
It’s 2/1 for Johnson to win 3 or more points and USA to win the Ryder Cup.
Spieth hasn’t been at his glittering best this year but is 8/1 to be USA’s top point-scorer.
