Rumour reel: Arsenal to throw money at Sanchez

Published:

One final roll of the dice to keep the Chilean

Welcome to the first Saturday of the new Premier League football season, and Watford host Liverpool at 12.30pm to get the day started. There’s also five 3.00pm kick-offs, before title favourites Man City meet newly-promoted Brighton at 5.30pm.

So, plenty for punters to get through, but the rumour reel refuses to roll over and play second fiddle to fixtures, as newspapers continue to link major clubs with major players. We mentioned Danny Rose’s remarks earlier this week, regarding Tottenham’s activity in the transfer market, or lack of it, and he has been forced to issue an apology for ill-judged comments.

Here’s the pick of the transfer news on Saturday morning…..

Sanchez  to be league’s highest earner

Arsenal played Leicester last night and Arsene Wenger is said to be lining up one final attempt at holding on to star striker Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean sat out of the Community Shield win over Chelsea at Wembley last week, and played no part in Friday’s opener vs Leicester. It’s no secret that Sanchez wants a move away from the club, but Wenger would prefer him to stay and help with the rebuilding job. There’s much work to do on that front, and it promises to be an important year for The Gunners as they aim to battle their way back into the Champions League, so the boss will stretch his wage budget to the max. Wenger is ready to offer Sanchez the £300,000-a-week he was after, making him the division’s highest paid player. Money talks, of course, but Arsene told the press he’s not optimistic it’ll work.

Juve bid £23m for Emre Can

Liverpool have spent all summer trying to fight Barcelona off, with the La Liga giants looking to force through a deal to bring Philippe Coutinho to the Nou Camp, and some sections of the media believe they are fighting a losing battle. With their eye off the ball, Juventus aim to pile the pressure on by submitting a bit for German Emre Can. The 23-year-old midfielder, bought from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 for £10m, has caught the eye of Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri, and he’s ready to test the water with a £23m offer. Can has less than a year left on his current contract at Anfield, and doesn’t appear to be in a rush to sign a new one, with negotiations ongoing, meaning The Reds will listen to any serious offers, rather than risk losing the player for free. Jurgen Klopp has already said he wants Can to stay.

West Ham latest club linked with Carvalho

West Ham go to Manchester United tomorrow for one-half of a stunning super Sunday line-up. They have already made some ambitious moves in the transfer window, and are ready to pull off another, spending a club record transfer fee of £27m on Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho. The Portuguese star has previously been linked to a move to Tottenham, but Spurs don’t appear to be in a rush to sign anyone at the moment, and Danny Rose’s outburst is said to be just the tip of the iceberg. The midfielder is no stranger to being connected with Premier League sides at this time of year, so we’ll keep this one filed under gossip at the minute, but some reports tell us that player and club have already reached a verbal agreement. Carvalho is keen to play his football in this part of the world, and The Hammers appear to have money to spend. We’ll keep you updated.
