N. Irishman to put a poor week behind him
The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open gets underway this week, in the latest leg of what promises to be a thrilling summer of golf. We get swinging on Thursday morning, deciding a winner on Sunday, and all the play is live on Sky Sports.

Noren a nice price to defend
This historic tournament has a bit of a fresh twist this year, staged for the first time at the Dundonald Links in Troon. Who will rise to the challenge? Coral traders mark Rickie Fowler up as their early favourite, and there’s no more than 8/1 on the young American. If you’re going to side with the shortest price, he’s not a bad man to trust with your stake money, and he came out on top here in 2015.
We’re at a new venue, so perhaps sticking with past winners won’t be as popular as it usually is. If you would like to keep recent form close, Alex Noren arrives as the man to beat, having carded a winning score of 14-under last year. The 34-year-old Swede stands as joint-third favourite at 16/1. A great price if you rate the chances of two in-a-row.
McIlroy has a point to prove
Rory McIlroy will arrive in Scotland looking to pick up some much-needed confidence, following a poor effort at the Irish Open last week. Rors went there as betting favourite, and rightly so, but just never seemed to settle, and certainly never seemed like he was capable of living up to the hype and bagging the prize money. A proud man, he’ll be desperate to make up for that with a strong push at Dundonald.
McIlroy, once again, missed the cut on Irish soil, and he’s developing a terrible run of form in front of his own people. Is it the pressure? We’re not too sure, but he’s had a poor year all round. Having said that, a week before The Open is as good a time as any to find his feet again, and that’s exactly what we think he’ll do.
Double-figure odds on Rors
We’ll need to see a big improvement from the 28-year-old, and he’ll have to catch a grip of his putting game is he wants to do followers a favour, but there’s no doubt the talent is there. You’re not betting on Rory’s ability, we’re taking a shot on him being determined enough to erase last week from memory. Don’t forget he’s had a bit of a break too.
Coral are currently trading our pick at 10/1, and it’s not often you’ll get double-figure odds about McIlroy. There’s 14/1 available in the first-round leader betting, if you expect a fast start, while Coral cater for each-way players, as always.
