Projection to land Stewards Cup

Race-by-race selections at Goodwood

Friday was another day of surprises at Glorious Goodwood, with Battaash winning the King George Stakes, beating short-price favourite Profitable in convincing fashion, 2 ¼ lengths the winning distance.

That was further proof, if punters needed any, that it’s worth siding with a plucky underdog at the Chichester course. We’re back there on Saturday for a day headlined by the Stewards Cup. As always, our race-by-race selections give punters on the move an interest, and we map out our NAP of the day below.

Bumper field to work through

Seven legs get started at 1.50pm with the Stewards’ Spring Handicap, a race we’re confident The Wagon Wheel will win, but we’re little more than interested bystanders until our best bet of the afternoon lines up in the bill-topper, the Stewards Cup, off at 3.35pm.

A massive 28-runner field is in attendance for this year’s renewal, meaning finding the winner will take some doing. A solid case could be made for many of these over the six-furlong trip, but our stake money will be riding on Projection.

Projection hoping for an honest pace

Roger Charlton’s four-year-old gelding hasn’t been spotted in the winner’s enclosure for a while now, last scoring at Salisbury over this trip almost two years ago. He has been catching the eye in defeat of late though, and placed in two of his last three outings, third at Newmarket last year and the same around Royal Ascot last time out in the Wokingham Stakes, ending behind Out Do and Steady Pace.

There wasn’t an awful lot in it, the selection coming off third in a bunch finish, so there’s plenty of positives to be taken from the form, and the Wokingham should provide a couple of clues as to how this will turn out. If the race is run to an honest pace – and we’re hoping it is – Projection will go close. Thankfully, Coral traders have taken up position on the fence, so there’s a cracking 9/1 that we’re right, easing out from an opening offer of 7/1.
