Preview and odds for Wednesday’s League Cup clash

Championship side Preston host Premier League Liverpool and we look at the odds to find some Preston v Liverpool betting tips for this League Cup clash.

Liverpool have won the trophy a joint-record eight times, the last of those coming nine years ago, while Preston’s previous major appearance in a domestic cup final was in the 1964 FA Cup showpiece when losing to West Ham.

Wednesday’s match, which takes place at Deepdale, kicks off at 7.45pm.

Preston v Liverpool match odds

Preston face a difficult task, with the high-flying Premier League outfit still fighting on four fronts  domestically and in Europe.

North End have beaten Mansfield (3-0 away), Morecambe (4-2 away) and Cheltenham (4-1 at home) to reach the last 16 and their reward is a glamour tie against the six-time European champions.

But they have not started the Championship season well and have won just three of their opening 14 games to sit in 19th place, their latest fixture ending in a 2-0 defeat at in-form Blackpool on Saturday.

Preston are bidding to reach the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history. They are 8/1 to defeat Liverpool in 90 minutes and 150/1 to win the trophy.

Frankie McAvoy’s side have drawn six of their Championship games, however, and have been tough to beat. It is 21/5 for the draw to occur this time.

Liverpool are 1/3 to win in 90 minutes and 4/1 second-favourites for the trophy behind Manchester City, who seek to lift the League Cup for a fifth consecutive season and surpass the Reds’ tally of wins in the competition.

The Reds defeated Norwich 3-0 at Carrow Road to reach the last 16.

Jurgen Klopp saw his Liverpool side win 5-0 at Manchester United on Sunday to leave them second in the Premier League table, a point behind Chelsea.

The Reds have progressed from 16 of their last 17 League Cup ties against sides from a lower division, with the exception being a shootout defeat to Northampton in 2010-11.

Preston v Liverpool head-to-head

This is the first meeting between Preston and Liverpool since January 2009, with the Reds winning 2-0 at Deepdale in an FA Cup tie.

This is also their first meeting in the League Cup.

They have faced each other in three previous domestic cup ties, with Preston winning 1-0 in a second replay in the 1961-62 FA Cup after both previous games ended goalless.

While Liverpool have won their last two meetings, Preston have lost just three of their last 15 encounters (W6 D6). It is 23/10 Preston win or draw in the Double Chance market.

Preston v Liverpool key battles

How does McAvoy set his side up to face a goal-scoring machine?

Including Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, Liverpool have scored 35 goals in their last 10 games in all competitions since being held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea.

While Klopp will likely utilise his squad depth and rest senior players for this clash, they are 27/20 to win to nil and 33/20 to win but concede.

Liverpool striker Divock Origi has been directly involved in 12 goals in his nine starts in the League Cup, scoring 10 and assisting two. He is 6/5 to score at any time.
