A look ahead to the 2022 Premier League Darts

The Premier League darts is back with a brand new format for 2022.

Replacing the round-robin competition will be 16 individual events at each location consisting of a best-of-11 quarter-finals, semi-final and final where the winner pockets a £10,000 prize.

Ranking points will also be awarded after each week, with the top four players at the end of 16 weeks advancing to the play-offs.

The PDC have resisted the urge to include Fallon Sherrock and with the full field finally revealed, we assess the Premier League Darts winner odds and chance of victory for the hopeful eight in the line-up.

Gerwyn Price

The Welshman is still ranked number one in the world after his 2021 World Championship win, which he followed up with another title at the Grand Slam of Darts.

His world title defence ended at the quarter-final stage, losing a classic to eventual runner-up Michael Smith, where the Iceman endured a frosty relationship with the crowd.

But Price is renowned for his fierce competitiveness and no one loves a scrap more than him as the favourite targets a first Premier League crown at odds of 10/3.

Michael Van Gerwen

No one will be looking forward to 2022 more than Michael Van Gerwen, who did not have an enjoyable 2021.

Not only did he fail to win a major PDC event for the first time since 2011, his World Championship hopes ended before the new year when he was forced to withdraw after testing positive for Covid.

The Dutchman is a five-time winner of the Premier League and will be targeting a return to the top of the sport he dominated in the mid-2010s.

Only Price is ahead of him in the betting and Mighty Mike has Premier League Darts winner odds of 7/2.

Jonny Clayton

The Ferret was half of the Welsh team that won the 2020 PDC World Cup of Darts before taking his game to the next level when registering his first televised tournament victory at the 2021 Masters.

That propelled him to the top tier of the darts world and he was soon included in last year’s Premier League where he continued his form, hitting a nine-dart finish on the third night of the competition.

Having reached the last four, he then defied the odds to see off Van Gerwen 10-8 in the semi-final before beating Jose de Sousa 11-5 in the final to become the first Welshman to win the Premier League title.

Further success followed at the World Grand Prix and the World Series of Darts Finals and the defending champion has to be respected with Premier League darts winner odds of 4/1.

Peter Wright

Fresh from winning his second World Championship crown, Wright has targeted the Premier League as the tournament he wants to win in 2022 having never made it past the semi-finals before.

Snakebite loves the big occasion and the change of format will suit him perfectly as he is renowned for his matchplay experience.

As well as the recent world title at Alexandra Palace, Wright also won the World Matchplay and the Players Championship in 2021, earning his status as one of the biggest names in the sport.

He is 6/1 in our Premier League darts winner odds to lift the Thursday night trophy for the first time.

Michael Smith

Bully Boy was again the nearly man as he lost the 2022 World Championship final to Wright – his seventh major final defeat from seven attempts.

One of those was the 2018 Premier League final so this is an event he enjoys and he is determined to come back fighting after his latest Ally Pally disappointment.

His love for 180s will stand him in good stead for any competition and if he can find consistent doubles he could be hard to stop in this new format and he has Premier League Darts winner odds of 6/1.

Gary Anderson

Anderson’s run to the World Championship semi-finals – where he lost an epic battle to Wright – showed that the Flying Scotsman still has what it takes to compete at the top of the game.

A persistent back injury has hampered him in recent years but when he is fit and firing few can match his scoring ability.

A two-time winner of the Premier League, this is a competition he enjoys and will fancy his chances of making that a hat-trick at a tasty 12/1 in our outright winner odds market.

Joe Cullen

Cullen’s inclusion in the eight-man line-up comes less than 24 hours after lifting his maiden TV title at The Masters and he is a 12/1 chance in the outright Premier League darts betting to continue that form on the Thursday-night stage.

He attempts to follow in the footseps of Clayton who also won his first title at The Masters before going on to Premier League success later that spring.

James Wade

The 2009 Premier League champion returns to the starting line-up having been originally left out of the 2021 competition, only to return as a Covid replacement for Price.

His best Premier League campaign since his victory 13 years ago was the semi-finals in 2019, but he will arrive here with plenty of confidence following his last-four appearance at Alexandra Palace in the World Championship.

The machine has Premier League Darts winner odds of 25/1.
