Odds and preview for PGA Tour tournament

After last week’s thrilling PGA Championship, it’s time for one last push for FedEx Cup playoff places as the regular season wraps up with the Wyndham Championship.

The tournament runs from Thursday to Sunday this week. And when all’s said and done at the Sedgefield Country Club, the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings will make the playoffs.

Before it gets started, we’ve looked at the favourites to triumph in Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as some longer shots worth keeping an eye on.

Webb Simpson – 10/1

Most players will have a tournament that really stands out for them. They’ll look forward to it every year. But by any standards, Webb Simpson has a very special connection with the Wyndham Championship.

He secured his first PGA Tour win here in 2011. The North Carolina native has seven top-10 finishes in 11 Wyndham Championship appearances, including second-place finishes in both of the last two years. Simpson loves this event so much he even named his daughter after it (really).

The frontrunner has already won twice this season and looks to be in very good shape for this one.

Brooks Koepka – 11/1

Brooks Koepka

After a bruising two weeks, can Brooks Koepka pick himself up here? He was fancied in the WGC FedEx St Jude, but finished second to Justin Thomas. Then his hopes of winning a third consecutive PGA Championship ended with a 4-over last Sunday.

That last-day performance at TPC Harding Park was out of character for the 30-year-old, who tends to deliver in majors.

This will be his sixth event in as many weeks – he’ll be keen to write Sunday off as a bad day at the office and for normal order to resume here.

Patrick Reed – 16/1

Along with Simpson and Koepka, Patrick Reed is the third top-10 player taking part in the Wyndham Championship.

Reed tasted his first Tour win here in 2013 and he’s finished in the top 25 in four of his eight starts so far this summer.

The Texan came 13th in last week’s PGA Championship, though that was in spite, rather than because of, his putting performance. If he can bring his short game back up to par, he could be a real threat here.

Ones to watch

Harris English is one of the most improved players on the circuit and with five top 10s this season, he could be worth considering at 22/1.

Brendon Todd (33/1) could be of interest too, given how his game should suit the Donald Ross-designed course.

And if you’re looking for a real outsider, how about Rafa Cabrera-Bello at 150/1? The three-time European Tour-winner finished in the top five here in 2015 and needs a good showing to reach the playoffs.
