Odds and preview for Thursday’s four-day tournament

The PGA Tour season begins anew at Silverado Resort in Napa, California, and we look at the odds to find some Fortinet Championship betting tips.

Big names like Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Hideki Matsuyama are in the 156-man line-up for the event, which begins on Thursday.

The Silverado Resort and Spa (North) is a par-72, 7,123-yard course first opened in 1955 and redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Jr, with Jonny Miller freshening up the layouts a decade ago.

Previous winners include Cameron Champ (2019), Brendan Steele (2016 and 2017) and Stewart Cink, who at 47 became the oldest winner on the PGA Tour since then 48-year-old Mickelson’s Pebble Beach with his success last year.

Market leaders

This is where the race for the FedEx Cup begins and the winner receives 500 points.

Rahm, who finished runner-up in this season’s FedEx Cup, heads the market.

The US Open champion and current world number one recorded no less than 15 top-10 finishes in just 22 events last season.

Second to Patrick Cantlay at East Lake last week, Rahm had just one win to his name in 2021 – that US Open triumph.

But he held a six-stroke lead through 54 holes at the Memorial before a positive Covid-19 test knocked him out of the event, which was eventually won by Cantlay.

Cantlay’s four wins – the 2020 Zozo Championship, 2021 Memorial, 2021 BMW Championship and 2021 FedEx Cup – stand out in a season where no other player won more than twice.

Yet Rahm had five top-10 finishes in majors this season, whereas Cantlay’s best standing in six marquee events was a T15.

Rahm, voted the PGA of America’s Player of the Year, is 4/1 to win in the Fortinet Championship betting tips.

Webb Simpson has four top-10 finishes without hitting the bullseye this year and there was plenty to like about the way he finished in the BMW Championship.

He has eight rounds in the 60s in his last three tournaments and if he plays like he did in the Wyndham, when T7, he can be considered at odds of 14/1.

Masters winner Matsuyama (pictured below) is another big name competing this week.

He was a disappointing T26 in the Tour Championship last time, although his T4 at the Olympics and T2 at the St Jude Invitational in recent weeks means he goes on the Fortinet Championship betting tips list at 20/1.

Larger odds

Kevin Na has enjoyed a terrific year.

He won the Sony Open, was T2 at the John Deere Classic and finished a fine third in the Tour Championship.

Five top-10 finishes, including a T2 at the Wyndham and T8 at the Northern Trust in recent weeks, underlines his good form and is a 22/1 shot.

Masters runner-up Will Zalatoris makes his debut as an official PGA Tour member and is 25/1. His latest T8 in the St Jude Invitational and T29 in the Wyndham Championship show his game is in good shape.

Si Woo Kim, runner-up in the Wyndham and T29 with a decent 12-under at the BMW Championship, is a 45/1 chance.

He won the American Express back in January and has been largely consistent in recent tournaments, so could interest each-way bettors.

Elsewhere

Maverick McNealy is a former Stanford star and will feel right at home here and is a 45/1 chance.

At bigger odds, Mito Pereira won three times to earn an immediate promotion to the PGA Tour this summer, where he had two top-six finishes before finishing T4 in the Olympics. He is a 60/1 chance.

Though he has missed three successive cuts, Ryan Moore did finish T2 at the John Deere Classic before that and has had a couple of rounds in the 60s since.

He is capable of upsetting the odds even though he has been far from consistent this year and is 80/1 in the Fortinet Championship betting tips.

Aaron Rai makes the commute from Sunday’s BMW PGA Championship, where he finished 13-under for a T14 finish. His consistent ball-striking means he can be considered at 90/1.
