Latest race preview and Formula E odds

Formula E continues its tour of the Far East this weekend for round six of the season in China.

It’s been a fascinating season so far. Five different drivers have won the opening five rounds, and just two points separates the top four in the championship.

So can anyone steal a decisive march this Sunday in Sanya, on the island of Hainan?

The season so far

The 2018-19 season has thrown up thrills and spills at every turn. No single driver or team has managed to claim a sustained advantage with the new Gen2 cars.

Edoardo Mortara won last time out in Hong Kong, after Sam Bird was handed a time-penalty for a collision with long-time race leader Andre Lotterer.

Bird was demoted to sixth, but that was enough to see the Englishman take top spot in the standings. He’s one point ahead of Jerome d’Ambrosio, with Lucas di Grassi and Motara just one point further back.

But with eight races still to go, pretty much the entire field will still fancy their chances of becoming this year’s champion.

Our traders are keeping the odds close too. Bird is slight favourite at this stage at 3/1, ahead of d’Ambrosio at 7/2. Di Grass is right in the mix too at 4/1.

But a win for any of Antonio Felix Da Costa (11/2), Pascal Wehrlein (13/2) or Jean-Eric Vergne (7/1) would have a seismic change on those odds.

More thrills expected

And who knows who’ll come out on top this weekend. This is Formula E’s first visit to China since 2015, and the first ever to the Sanya circuit.

Located on the island of Hainan, off the eastern coast of Vietnam, the 1.3m circuit has a particularly narrow and wall-laded opening sector. That should ensure plenty of drama during the weekend.

But there is a tight hairpin too, which is likely to provide the main overtaking opportunity. So we should be in for another cracker. But who will come through the melee?
