Liverpool and Spurs have parts to complete each other
As anticipation builds ahead of the Liverpool v Tottenham EFL Cup clash on Tuesday evening, Coral experts contemplate that these two terrific teams are missing the best parts of one another in their trophy tilts.
Two squads which would compliment each other perfectly if combined will face-off for the second time this term.
Spurs are solid at the back with only one goal conceded in all competitions across their past five frays, which makes them an enticing 2/1 to win a major trophy this season.
Yet, what has stopped them from topping the Premier League table is an injury to Harry Kane. Without their main man, Tottenham’s attack has struggled and stalled Mauricio Pochettino’s progress – as we previously pointed out before the Londoners drew again at the weekend.
While, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are playing some of the Premier League’s best football. Insatiable in attack they may be, but the Merseysiders still look liable to leak a goal anytime with all that forward thinking. With an unstable goalkeeper situation, Liverpool have kept only three clean sheets in all competitions this campaign.
Are either deficiencies able to be overcome for these two ambitious teams to win trophies? It should certainly make for an exciting match-up on Tuesday, as the Londoners and Liverpudlians prepare to have their weaknesses tested. This encounter should tell us more about who is best able to hide their Achilles heel.
Oh how Klopp must wish he could swap one of his shaky stoppers Simon Mignolet or Lorius Karius, for the reliable handywork of Hugo Lloris in net. While, exchanging a Reds centre back such as the (improved but still lacking) Dejan Lovren for almost impenetrable duo Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, would make Liverpool a fierce force in football.
But equally, Liverpool possess Pochettino’s missing pieces too, as a direct and rapid Sadio Mane (17/10 to score anytime), or creative Philippe Coutinho (5/1 to fire in the opener) could add so much to Spurs’ hunt for silverware. Luckily for PL rivals, these sides can’t trade!
How frailties impact our Liverpool v Tottenham tips
While aspects are missing from Klopp and Pochettino’s play, this clash of opposites should be exciting. Bearing in mind that Spurs have failed to find the net in back-to-back games, but also factoring in Liverpool’s defensive weakness, the Reds to win and both teams score is a generous 9/4 price.
Tottenham achingly missed out on goals against Bournemouth but created plenty. Against a roving Reds side high in confidence but sloppy at defending, the English capital club should find plenty more space to exploit.
Gaps will be left at the back but, at the moment, Liverpool are free-scoring and will simply attempt to bag more than the opposition. When you have a wobbly rearguard the best form of defence is attack.
And going on the current form of all top-flight teams, if there is a side that can puncture the Spurs defence – it has to be the Anfield outfit.
As for trophy specials, although we previously highlighted that Klopp’s backline could scupper Liverpool’s chances of success, but they’ve since gone from strength to strength.
So, taking 10/11 for the Reds to claim a major trophy this term should be snapped up speedily.
While, if they overcome Tottenham on Tuesday, awesome odds of 20/1 for a PL and EFL Cup double are sure to shorten.
