League Two betting tips: Oldham look for a boost

| 15.09.2021

Preview and odds for a trio of Saturday’s games

There are 12 League Two games being played on Saturday and we look at a selection of those matches in our League Two betting tips.

It is a another busy weekend in the EFL and we also have previews of the Championship and League One but here we focus on the fourth tier.

Oldham v Hartlepool

It seems like only yesterday when Oldham were founder members of the Premier League and beating the likes of West Ham 6-0 in the League Cup semi-final.

While Andy Ritchie (pictured above), Frankie Bunn and plastic pitches will live long in the memory, 30 years on the Latics have hit rock bottom.

They prop up England’s fourth tier, having won just one of their opening seven games, and losing the other six. The defensive problems that plagued them last season have still to be addressed and they have shipped 14 goals, with their latest drubbing coming at the hands of Leyton Orient, who scored four without reply.

Oldham are 15/8 to beat Hartlepool, who slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Sutton on Tuesday. It was their third defeat of the season, but they sit fifth in the table, having won four, including last Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Bristol Rovers. Hartlepool are 29/20 to win.

The Latics have won four of the last five meetings, however, with just two of the last 18 meetings being drawn. The draw is on offer at 9/4.

The teams last met in League One in March 2013, with Oldham recording a 3-0 home win.

Indeed, Oldham’s record in the last seven meetings against Hartlepool at Boundary Park has an interesting symmetry. It reads: LWLWLW.

Exeter v Sutton

September 11 is always a poignant date in the calendar and more so for fans of Sutton, who saw their side record their first victory in the Football League on that date last weekend.

Stevenage were the victims at Gander Green Lane, with a second-half brace from Richie Bennett putting him into the history books of the Surrey club.

Like buses, wait long enough and two come along at once. The Us broke their duck at the fifth time of asking and immediately won a second game, seeing off Hartlepool 1-0 at home on Tuesday courtesy of Ben Goodliffe’s first-half strike.

They are 23/10 to win their first away game in the league in the League Two betting tips.

A trip to Exeter won’t be easy, though. The Grecians sit ninth, having lost one of their seven games (W2 D4).

After taking a point off unbeaten Harrogate and league leaders Forest Green respectively, Exeter showed why they are one of the favourites for promotion with a 4-0 win at Scunthorpe on Saturday.

Having won one and drawn two of their three games at St James Park, they are 5/4 to beat their in-form visitors while the draw is on offer at 11/5.

Colchester v Crawley

Colchester have lost just once in seven outings this season and so, at first glance, it is a surprise to see them odds against for the visit of Crawley.

Their only loss was a single-goal defeat at home to high-flying Northampton and they come into this off the back of three successive road games, picking up wins at Oldham and Barrow, with a draw at Rochdale in between. They are 23/20 to beat Crawley.

The Red Devils finally got the Carlisle monkey off their back, beating the Cumbrians at the ninth time of asking at home on Saturday, but they have lost all three trips away from home this season and are 5/2 to win on Saturday.

However, Crawley have lost just three of their 13 league games against Colchester since 2012 (W8 D6). Indeed, they have lost just two of their eight trips to the Colchester Community Stadium (W2 D4).

The last two meetings there both ended in 1-1 draws. The draw is on offer at 11/5.
