Five tasty top 10 shouts for US Open golf tournament

Sam Barnard, Assistant Sports Editor | June 14, 2016

Punters and sports fans may have their minds stuck in the midst of Euro 2016, but don’t forget that the second golfing Major of the year, the US Open, is also on our screens.

The world’s top stars will once again battle it out for the famous tournament, this time held at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, and Coral have picked out five tasty-priced players to finish in the top 10…

Danny Willett

Sheffield-born Willett’s stock in golf has dramatically risen following his thrilling Masters success back in April, yet he is still a highly tempting 5/2 shout just to finish in the top 10 here.

The 28-year-old Yorkshireman did fantastically well by showing great maturity and mental strength to hold off defending champion Jordan Spieth and experienced fellow Englishman Lee Westwood, and should have no trouble putting in a top display at Oakmont.

Willett has been drawn to tee-off alongside Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler for the first two rounds, which can only be good for his performance.

Hideki Matsuyama

At the same 5/2 price, rising Japanese star Matsuyama represents great value too, having finished tied seventh last time out at The Masters.

In the 24-year-old’s short career thus far, he has already gained four top 10 finishes at Majors, while also claimed the Waste Management Phoenix Open title earlier this year and showed good form at the Players Championship in May too.

Daniel Berger

American golf is certainly on the rise again, with a number of youngsters playing well just in time for the Ryder Cup later this year, and 23-year-old Berger is one of those.

The unorthodox Florida native recently claimed his maiden PGA Tour win, at the St Jude Classic on Sunday to follow on from a commendable tied-10th place finish at The Masters, and so is 11/2 to finish in the top 10 here too.

Matthew Fitzpatrick

Sheffield seems to have produced a number of topical sports stars of late, with the likes of fellow golfer Willett as well as footballer Jamie Vardy, decathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill and world champion boxer Kell Brook all hailing from the Yorkshire city too.

Fitzpatrick is the latest from that line, after finishing tied seventh at the 2016 Masters and then picking up the recent Nordea Masters title. At 21 years of age, he has a great future ahead of him, and is 11/2 to finish in the top 10 in successive Majors this year.

Charl Schwartzel

South African Schwartzel is a more established name on tour than the above, having been around the top names in the world for a number of years now and being a Masters champion back in 2011.

He came seventh in the US Open last year, while has already tasted title success in 2016 too at the Tshwane Open, so is a tasty 11/2 price to be among the top 10 again here.
