Five players to turn Borussia Dortmund’s season around

Has the bubble finally burst at Borussia Dortmund? In the 2011/12 season, they overhauled Bayern Munich and won the Bundesliga and German Cup with arguably one of the best squads in Europe.

They are now currently second bottom in their domestic league, though a surprisingly modest 28/1 to win the Champions League (same odds as Italian champions and Serie A leaders Juventus).

Although they have been ravaged with injuries this season, Jurgen Klopp still should have enough quality in his squad to be at least in the top four.

Undoubtedly, the tipping point was the loss of lethal striker Robert Lewandowski, who left Dortmund for bitter rivals Bayern Munich in the summer to join former player Mario Gotze, with the 22-year-old leaving the previous year in a £31.5m deal.

It is now the winter break, and coach Klopp, as well as the Westfalenstadion hierarchy, must decide whether to enter into the transfer market in January.

Arkadiusz Milik
Having failed to effectively replace Lewandowski in the summer, Klopp should look no further than his Poland international teammate Milik, who is pulling up trees while on loan at Ajax.

There’s just one small problem; he is owned by Bayer Leverkusen, who sit third in the league and may have plans of their own for the 20-year-old, who has scored 17 goals in 16 outings for the Amsterdam giants across all competitions.

Ricardo Rodriguez
Even with a fully fit first XI, Dortmund’s weak point is at left back. Understudy Erik Durm simply isn’t good enough and Marcel Schmelzer has struggled with injuries, though Wolfsburg’s attack-minded Swiss star Rodriguez would certainly fit the bill.

Alan Dzagoev
Highly-rated Russia international Dzgoev is yet to really realise his vast potential, and Klopp could nurture that out of him. Boasting an eye for a pass, he ideally needs a striker ahead of him who he can establish an effective relationship with. Dortmund never really replaced Gotze, and Dzagoev can be that man.

Andriy Yarmolenko
Dynamo Kiev’s flying winger has hit nine goals so far this season, and would offer Dortmund a different dynamic in attack. He has been linked to a number of top clubs in Europe though, if the Klopp can land him, it would be a real coup.

Jackson Martinez
Porto’s clinical Colombia hitman has reportedly been attracting interest from the Premier League, though Dortmund should look no further if they want to effectively replace Lewandowski.
