Five of the best Manchester derby drubbings

We’re not far into the football season but, already, it is time for the second Manchester derby of the campaign as Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup round four.

Both teams have suffered the indignity of 4-0 thrashings recently, with United’s coming at the hands of Chelsea and City slain by Barcelona. So, if you’re hunting for Man Utd v Man City EFL Cup odds, you can grab a great 9/5 price for Pep Guardiola’s guys to win in 90 minutes.

Now, the Red Devils and Sky Blues must patch up their wobbly rearguards ahead of Wednesday’s fixture fray. Will there be goals galore as both look defensively shaky and require a morale boosting win to get back on track? There is also a tasty 5/2 price for over four goals to be scored in the game.

All this got us thinking of the best ever Manchester derby drubbings, so Coral experts have compiled a list complete with videos of memorable Mancunian maulings on both sides. Enjoy!

Man Utd 1-6 Man City, October 2011

Sorry United fans, but we couldn’t start anywhere else than with this sensational City scoreline, as the Sky Blues smashed six with glee past their hosts at Old Trafford.

It wasn’t the first 6-1 win for the Citizens, though, as they previously enjoyed this result back in 1926! But, unfortunately we can only go as far back as the video archives allow…

The Red Devils came unstuck in spectacular style in this Premier League encounter, as braces from Mario Balotelli (‘Why Always Me?’) and Edin Dzeko, plus a strike apiece for Sergio Aguero (7/4 to score anytime again) and David Silva, handed Citizens fans bragging rights on Monday morning.

It may have been a one-off result, but it was a real watershed moment for Man City, who went on to win their first Premier League era title in 2011/12. Red Devils support may want to erase this date from their diary as it occurred on October 23rd, five years (to the day) before United’s recent Chelsea humbling.

Man Utd 5-0 Man City, November 1994

Next up, back in the old days Premiership days, when the Red Devils were in their pomp under Sir Alex Ferguson they regularly exerted their dominance in the local derbies. While, an embattled City could never have imagined what the future would have in store as they failed to muster a response to this thrashing.

Andrei Kanchelskis was the hat-trick hero here, but enigmatic Eric Cantona also added a famous goal. A certain Mark Hughes got in on the action too, but little did he know he would one day manage the opposition and help begin their transition into arguably the better Manchester team!

Man City 5-1 Man Utd, September 1989

It wasn’t always rainbows and sunshine in the early part of Ferguson’s reign, as the Scot initially struggled to raise the Red Devils from the ashes in the late 1980s. This would be the famous year the FA Cup was won, but not before some bumps in the road.

This won’t be one of the great manager’s happiest memories, as the Sky Blues strutted to a 5-1 league victory, in what was dubbed ‘The Maine Road Massacre of 1989.’ Check out the vintage action below, including a double from David Oldfield…

Man City 4-1 Man Utd, September 2013

Despite having clocked up 20 more victories in this fixture across all competitions than noisy neighbours City, United have tended to suffer the most memorable modern day demolitions.

Here, the Etihad was rocking, as that man Aguero dispatched a deadly double, condemning the Red Devils to a 4-1 away disappointment, despite a late consolation from Wayne Rooney.

Slick Man City tore through the defending champions, eventually going on to win the PL title, as their rivals slumped to seventh in the aftermath of Ferguson’s retirement. The centre of Manchester power had moved.

Man Utd 4-2 Man City, February 2004

This was one of Man Utd’s last big home wins against Man City, who at this time struggled to stay in the division. In this FA Cup classic, the Sky Blues did salvage some pride with two late replies, including one from Robbie Fowler.

Yet, they still leaked four to a 10-men team after Gary Neville saw red after only one goal had been scored by the hosts in this feisty encounter. Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes and a young Cristiano Ronaldo were the scorers, as the Red Devils went on to win the competition, with Sir Alex building his next great side.
