Droopys Buick to turn on the the style at Newcastle

Droopys Buick looks a cut-above in Wilf Husband Memorial Final

The Wilf Husband Memorial Final (21.08) is the feature race on a cracking evening of open race action at Newcastle tonight (Live on Sky Sports 4), and Droopys Buick looks a worthy odds-on favourite to enhance his superb record at the venue.

Buick is one of three finalists for local handler Jimmy Wright, and is a class act who has secured a dream draw in Trap 1.

The son of Yeah Man made the final of the Scottish Derby, and was well fancied by many for English version until being ruled out through injury.

However, he looked better than ever when equalling the fastest time of the year over course and distance in the heats, pinging out and leading at the first bend to draw clear and register an impressive 6 1/2 length success in 28.18.

That win was his fourth from five runs at the track, and he is 1-1 in the red jacket at it.

If breaking in similar fashion it should be a case of how far for Droopys Buick as he has tons in hand on his rivals on the clock.

Here’s my thoughts and selections on the seven supporting races:

7.11 Maiden Puppy 480m

Going All In has a lovely draw as the sole wide seed in T6 and can exploit possible crowding on the inside to land the spoils. Trained locally by Jimmy Wright, the son of Razldazl George is four from nine from the stripes at the track and comes into the contest having landed an A2 impressively by four lengths before being far from disgraced when third in a Open last time out to Bramble Mackem when showing early pace before encountering trouble at the first two bends.

7.26 Marathon 895m

T6 Roxholme Magic is long odds-on to make it seven wins on the spin and impossible to oppose. Hayley Keightley’s bitch is one of the best marathon performers of recent times and is bidding to land a fifth track record in her last seven starts. Her middle race pace and powerpacked finish are a sight to behold, and she should simply blow away the opposition once again. T2 Fabulous Landing looks the most likely one to chase her home for the forecast.

7.43 Sprint 290m

Walshes Hill is one of the top sprinters around and has won seven of his nine starts at the track. Four of his five fastest times have also come at the venue, but he is not run from T5 at it and at odds-on I am keen to take him on with T1 Azzurri Dino. Pat Rosney’s dog has an excellent record in the red jacket and comes into the contest at the top of his game having won three of his last five starts. He is set for a clear run up the rails, and if pinging and leading at the first will take some pegging back.

7.59 Maiden 480m

T1 Aclamon Giro has a fantastic draw and rates the best bet on the card. Trained by Belle Vue-based June McCombe, the son of Makeshift opened his account in style on home soil in A1 company when scoring by 9 3/4 lengths in a fast time. He has since very well in a recent solo trial at this venue, clocking a rapid 4.63 sectional and winning time of 28.61. Aclamon Giro is sure to improve for that sighter, and if trapping in similar fashion should be away and gone at the first bend.

8.16 Standard 480m

T1 Pinpoint Boom beat T2 Save The Don by two lengths when they last met and is taken to confirm the form. The Kelly Macari trained son of Shaneboy Lee once again has the advantage of being drawn inside his main market rival and is a class act as he showed when winning the 2015 Eclipse. Pinpoint is blessed with early pace, and his last two runs in the red jacket at Sheffield have seen him register wide margin successes. If timing it right at the lids, he can lead Save The Don to the bend and quickly stamp his authority on the race.

8.33 640m

In a race where there is possibility of all sorts of trouble as a result of the draw, I think it could pay to side with the local Shellam Maeby. Jimmy Wright’s bitch has won seven of her 25 starts at the track over various distances and is two from seven in Open races. Although T4 is not ideal as their is a distinct possibility of crowding on the inside, Shellam is powerful finisher and if holding her pitch at the first bend and turning handy can turn the screw from halfway.

8.51 Puppy Standard Final 480m

Bramble Mackem has returned to form with a vengeance following a lengthy absence and looks decent value to get the better of the favourite Newinn Blitz. Steven Anderson’s dog has won his last three starts from Trap 5, and once again sports the orange jacket. He has a near 50 per cent strike rate in it at the venue (four wins from nine runs) and with T2 Newinn Blitz flanked with pace on either side can use his local knowledge to good effect to lead at the first and land the four-timer.
