Rob Cross and Corey Cadby could impress
Featuring players from both the PDC and the BDO, the Grand Slam of Darts is the only competition that unifies both codes.
The tournament – which begins with a group stage format – will last for eight days and take place at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall.
Michael van Gerwen will start as the odds-on 8/11 favourite ahead of Gary Anderson at 11/2, Peter Wright at 7/1 and Phil Taylor who is a 9/1 shot.
Here, the Coral News Team look at the outside chances for one of the sport’s most exciting events…
Rob Cross
Rob Cross is the hottest property in darts at the moment. The PDC novice has reached the final in two of the last three tournaments, losing out to Michael van Gerwen each time.
On that basis – and give that he has won a hugely impressive four Players Championship events in his maiden season, odds of 25/1 for him to succeed in Wolverhampton look grossly overpriced. He’s 11/1 to make the final.
Mensur Suljovic
Mensur Suljovic – or ‘The Gentle’ as he is otherwise known – has enjoyed a breakthrough year on the circuit. Following a string of quarter-final appearances, the Austrian finally broke his duck when storming to the Champions League of Darts in September.
For a player who is always there or thereabouts, his place as the 25/1 fifth-favourite for the competition appears fair. And that makes a price of 7/1 on Suljovic to qualify for the final all the more enticing.
Daryl Gurney
After landing the World Grand Prix in Dublin last month, Gurney has the bit between his teeth to go on and win even more. He followed that success up with consecutive semi-finals in the European Championship and World Series of Darts Finals.
And the feeling in the Coral News Team is that another tournament victory is forthcoming for the Northern Irishman. He’s 28/1 for success in Wolverhampton and 14/1 for a final berth. He has what looks to be a kind group, which makes him an even more viable option for potential backers.
Corey Cadby
Despite being one of the sport’s brightest young talents, this will only be Corey Cadby’s second appearance in England. Regardless, his form in Australia suggests that the 22-year-old can spring a shock at 66/1.
He saw off Phil Taylor when reaching the final of the Auckland Darts Masters in August. And that was followed up by a quarter-final appearance in Melbourne a week later. Although still young, Cadby has the raw quality to challenge in Wolverhampton, especially with final appearance odds of 22/1.
Danny Noppert
Of the BDO’s eight representatives, it’s Danny Noppert who makes the most appeal. The Dutchman reached the last-16 of the competition last year where he bowed out against Gary Anderson.
He pushed the then-reigning PDC World Champion all the way, though, eventually losing out 10-9. At odds of 125/1, he makes significant appeal as an outside chance. Otherwise, he is an equally tempting 66/1 to reach the final.
