Coral English Open day 1 tips

The baize battles at EventCity in Manchester get underway on Monday. So, Coral snooker experts give their English Open day 1 tips.

As proud sponsors of this brand new tournament, we’re offering top odds as greats past and present take to the table chasing the £70k top prize on offer to the winner.

Who have our snooker tipsters picked out as value bets for the first day of the first round, then? Read on to find out…

Stuart Bingham odds to lead Robert Milkins 3-1 after four frames

World number two Stuart Bingham is where we start, and he faces fellow veteran Robert Milkins in his opening assignment.

The Milkman was once ranked as high as 12th, but he’s got a poor head-to-head record against Ball Run.

Bingham, the 2015 World Snooker Championship victor at the Crucible, should put himself in a commanding position in this battle.

Coral’s top tip: Back Stuart Bingham odds to lead Milkins 3-1 after four frames at 6/4.

A deciding frame in Joe Perry v Matthew Selt

Just 13 places in snooker’s world rankings separate Joe Perry (11) and Matthew Selt (24). Compared to some other English Open first round clashes, this looks a close one to call.

These two have only met competitively once before and that was in a similar best-of-even frames affair on the players’ tour in 2010.

Selt edged that 4-3, but safer odds of 11/5 say there will be a decider in his latest clash with Gentleman Joe.

Stuart Carrington to be frames 1-4 winner against Peter Ebdon

Grimsby potter Stuart Carrington has proved a thorny foe for 2002 World Snooker champion Peter Ebdon in the past.

Captain Slow’s grinding out tactics on the baize don’t seem to work against this relative youngster, so it may be wiser to bet against Ebdon.

Carrington is a terrific 2/1 to be frames 1-4 winner after leading their previous two head-to-heads 4-0 by that stage.

Zhou Yuelong to beat Jimmy White with a 1.5 frame handicap

As popular as six-time Crucible runner-up Jimmy White is with snooker fans, he’s never beaten Zhou Yuelong of China before.

Comfortable 4-2 and 4-1 scorelines in meetings last year and 2014 respectively suggest the Chinese cueman can win with a handicap.

That market is set at 1.5 frames for this fixture, so Zhou Yuelong should be able to cover that at evens.

Monday sevenfold snooker acca

Finally, we’ve picked out seven bankers to win and combined them into an awesome acca at current combined odds of just over 5/2*. A €/£1 stake if siding with all of the below returns €/£3.51.

One-time UK champion Stephen Maguire (1/14)*, snooker legend Stephen Hendry’s nephew James Cahill (1/5)*, Mark King (2/5)*, Chinese sensation Ding Junhui (1/12)*, double Crucible king Mark Williams (1/8)*, and fellow Welsh potters Ryan Day (2/5)* and Matthew Stevens (1/7)* all look dead certs to progress.

This sensational sevenfold snooker acca is just crying out to be taken, because these established names all face lesser opposition.
