Preview and odds for Saturday’s League One match

League One action returns this weekend with the Addicks and Owls both starting their promotion bids as we look at some potential Charlton v Sheff Wed betting tips.

Charlton enjoyed a good pre-season winning two of their six friendlies, drawing two and losing two, while Sheffield Wednesday won three of their five friendlies before enduring a League Cup exit to Huddersfield on penalties last week.

The game takes place at The Valley on Saturday and is live on Sky Sports, with a 5.30pm kick-off.

Charlton v Sheff Wed match odds

Two of the League One title favourites clash with Charlton 31/20 to get the season off to a winning start.

Nigel Adkins took over with 10 games remaining last term and Charlton lost just one of those outings.

They appear as though they have started where they left off, with some decent pre-season results, including a 2-2 draw with Premier League Crystal Palace and an unlucky 1-0 defeat at Championship favourites Fulham.

While Adkins has managed to add a number of bodies, he is still looking to bring in reinforcements and fans will expect a promotion push following Thomas Sandgaard’s takeover of the club earlier this year.

Wednesday’s competitive season has already started but they created few chances and were fortunate to draw 0-0 with Huddersfield before losing the shoot-out.

In Charlton v Sheff Wed betting tips, the visitors are 15/8 to win at Charlton and it is 21/10 for the draw.

The Owls have made 11 new signings, only two of whom do not have Championship experience and Wednesday boss Darren Moore has attracted plenty of quality, including Stoke striker Lee Gregory and Middlesbrough winger Marvin Johnson.

Adkins will need to find a way to nullify the threat posed by Barry Bannan (pictured above), Lewis Wing and Massimo Luongo, who are among the best midfield trios in the division.

While it may take time for the new faces to gel, Wednesday are in a far more positive place than they were a couple of months ago.

Charlton v Sheff Wed head-to-head

Wednesday have won the last three meetings but they have not won four consecutive meetings since 1990. It is 2/5 that Charlton win or draw the game on the Double Chance market.

The Addicks had lost just two of the previous 10 meetings prior to that, winning five, and they are 17/4 to win but concede.

Eight of the last 10 meetings saw both teams score and it is 20/23 that this will be the case again.

Charlton v Sheff Wed team news

Wednesday’s new on-loan signing, QPR striker Olamide Shodipo, will not be risked after he limped out of their League Cup clash. Josh Windass is also sidelined for the next few weeks.

Charlton have four players missing. Ben Purrington, Alex Gilbey and Jake Forster-Caskey are all out injured, whilst the match is likely to come too soon for Ronnie Schwartz.

New signings Craig MacGillivray, Sean Clare and George Dobson could make their official debuts while Jayden Stockley and Akin Famewo are back and are also in line to start.

Charlton v Sheff Wed key battles

Moore will hope one of the most expensively assembled squads in the league knits together quickly in a division which is the land of the proverbial sleeping giants.

Ipswich and Wigan have spent plenty of cash, while Sunderland, Portsmouth and Charlton are all big players vying for promotion.

The Owls defence will need to keep Conor Washington and Stockley on a tight leash, and both Charlton men are 21/10 to score at any time.
