BVB lead the way going into Christmas

Borussia Dortmund suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of lowly Fortuna Dusseldorf in midweek.

However, they’ve been in scintillating form under new manager Lucien Favre and still sit six points clear of their nearest challengers.

Their next two games will go a long way to finding out if they are the real deal or just the young pretenders.

We take a look at some of the challenges they face and who could come up clutch for the league leaders.

Battle of the Borussias?

Bayern Munich are still playing catch up after an indifferent start to the season. But it looks like Dieter Hecking has found a remedy for success at Borussia Monchengladbach.

His side are sitting in second, and who do they face in their final match before the winter break? Dortmund of course.

‘Gladbach have won five of their last seven games and have both Thorgan Hazard and Alassane Plea making up 18 of their 35 goals to date.

This will be a pivotal game for BVB, who are 8/15 for victory, to show they’re serious contenders after their first defeat.

If they can win on Friday night and then begin with a bang against Champions League challenging RB Leipzig after the break, the Dortmund faithful may begin to dream.

Future Golden boy?

Die Schwarzgelben have a colourful collection of young talent at their disposal. Manuel Akanji, Abdou Diallo and Dan-Axel Zagadou are the glue at the back.

But it’s the array of attacking potential that’s the most exciting. They’d pinned their hopes of the Christian Pulisic’s relatively inexperienced shoulders.

But it’s a young Englishman that has everyone talking. Jadon Sancho has burst onto the scene and already bagged 5 goals and 7 assists this campaign.

Sancho has muscled his way into the England national team and has been a certain starter in Favre’s free-flowing attack.

Ajax defender Mathijs De Ligt may have just won the best young player in Europe award, but it’s clear to see Sancho is Dortmund’s golden boy.

Can they hold their nerve?

It’ll be a big step if Dortmund can navigate their way through the next two games without loss.

But if they do get past Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League in February then they’ll have a decision to make.

Stick or twist.

They have a crucial trio of games in the Bundesliga between mid-March and the beginning of April that could shape their title hopes.

It begins with a trip to Hertha Berlin, who they haven’t beaten in their last two games.

Three points in the home tie against an improving Wolfsburg will be vital, with the road trip to Munich a week later.

Dortmund are 10/11 to win their first title since 2012. But can they hold their nerve?
