New NBA season is almost here

The 2018-19 NBA season is already on the horizon. Just two months after the Golden State Warriors clinched their third championship in four years, the new season schedule has been released.

The Warriors are the 4/7 favourites to retain their crown, ahead of the Boston Celtics at 6/1 and the Houston Rockets at 8/1. But which games should you look out for this season? The Coral News Team has picked out five of the best.

Cleveland Cavaliers v Los Angeles Lakers

This match-up on 21st November is all about LeBron James. The 6ft 8in star makes his first return to the Quicken Loans Arena since swapping the Cavaliers for the Lakers in July. James enjoyed a brilliant time of it in Ohio and helped the franchise to their first major sports title in 52 years.

He’s lauded as a hero in his hometown. But his eyes will be firmly fixed on guiding the Lakers to victory as they bid for their first NBA Championship since 2010.

Cleveland Cavaliers v Golden State Warriors

LeBron may be gone but this 5th December clash between the NBA finalists in each of the last four years promises to be huge. The Cavs hold the bragging rights by three titles to one after making it two wins in as many seasons with a 4-0 drubbing last term.

The amount of success shared between the pair is only half the story, though. We’re also looking forward to the continued rivalry between Tristan Thompson and Draymond Green. The pair clashed in last year’s finals and then again a month later at a LeBron James-hosted party in Hollywood.

The main man may be gone. But this match-up still has plenty of spice.

Philadelphia 76ers v Boston Celtics

There are three Christmas Day games to whet the appetite this season. But the Celtics taking on the 76ers is the pick of the bunch. The two sides have appeared in 31 finals combined and boast one of the strongest rivalries in the Atlantic Division.

They’ve met an incredible 544 times in total, with the Celtics dominating the head-to-head record 312-232. They also meet in the opening match of the season on Tuesday 16th October, but who will come out on top between Kyrie Irving and Joel Embiid’s on Christmas Day?

San Antonio Spurs v Toronto Raptors

In any ordinary season, the Spurs against the Raptors wouldn’t raise any eyebrows. But things are different this time around. The two sides have been involved in a blockbuster close season trade which has seen star Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan swap jerseys with two-time Defensive Player of the Year Kawhi Leonard.

That’s a huge deal. And it doesn’t end there. Spurs veteran Danny Green has also gone to Canada with Jakob Poeltl and a protected first-round pick in 2019. They won’t face their former sides until 4th January. But when they do, it’s sure to be a hell of a watch.

Washington Wizards v New York Knicks

London has proved a popular location for regular season NBA games. Eight have been held in the capital in total. This year it’s the turn of the Wizards and the Knicks. The latter of the pair won on their only previous appearance at the O2 Arena back in 2013, while this will be the Wizards’ first ever game overseas.

Bradley Beal, John Wall, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Joakim Noah are just four of the standout names who are set to feature beside the Thames on Thursday 17th January.
