We’re back in full-swing as a jam-packed midweek domestic football schedule features matches from both the English and Scottish League Cups.
Highlight from the tournament now known as the Carabao Cup goes in Colchester where the locals invite John Terry’s Aston Villa to town for a match played out in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
In Scotland, there are some intriguing ties to pick through, the best of them going at Dens Park where Dundee take on Dundee United in knock-out football. Aston Villa beat Colchester
John Terry wouldn’t have imagined playing competitive football at the home of League Two side Colchester at this stage of his career, but that’s exactly what the former England captain does on Wednesday. Villa go to Essex and we expect them to pull rank and get their name into the hat for the next round. Steve Bruce’s side drew 1-1 with Hull at the weekend on Championship duty, but they’ll come on for that and will find Colchester a much easier side to break down. 8/15 on the away win is a perfect way to start us off.
Bolton beat Crewe
Another Championship side in with lower league opposition and this will be the first meeting between these two since 2014, The Trotters winning 3-2 in this very competition. Crewe had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Mansfield on Saturday, but twice took the lead. Mansfield are favourites to win the league, so that can’t be ignored, but it’s all about levels and Bolton will be too good on the night. 10/11 away day smacks of value.
Sheffield United beat Walsall
The Blades got off to a great start in the Championship, beating Brentford 1-0 in a slug-fest. They needed a real match winner, and it was no surprise to anyone in football when Billy Sharp proved to be just that, grabbing the decisive goal just before half-time. Sharp is worth his weight in gold to United and we’re sure he’ll have a say again in midweek. Sheff Utd are at home and can be trusted at 1/2.
Aberdeen beat Hamilton
Moving to take in a pair from the Scottish version, and we start with Aberdeen over Hamilton. An all-Premiership clash, but it rarely pays to oppose The Dons in domestic action and after being dumped out of the Europa League, everyone at the club will be hurting. They did everything but win a trophy last term, so silverware looks a must this year. They’ll have a job on their hands, but will beat a fairly average Accies at 8/15.
Dundee beat Dundee Utd
Lastly, the derby rivals are at it again, and after being drawn together in the group stages of the competition, they’ve been paired in the knockout phase. They drew 1-1 at this venue little over a week ago, but fitness will be returning to the hosts and with a top-flight match under their belt, they go into Wednesday’s tie a better team. Home win at 27/20.
