We take a shot on the outsider

Punters move on to the next leg of what has already been a gripping summer of golf when taking in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, Ohio. Follow each of the four days live on Sky Sports from Thursday, and place your bets throughout play with us.

With the USPGA Championship now just a week away, we have a star-studded field in attendance, as the sports’ major names aim to put the finishing touches to their game in preparation for the year’s final major. Click here to bet on the outright winner, or a list of intriguing match bets.

Dustin Johnson

Spieth and DJ expected to battle it out

Coral backers who enjoy keeping the market leader close when placing their weekly golf bets will find Jordan Spieth available as the shortest price of the field, currently trading at 8/1. The young American is given the nod over nearest rival Dustin Johnson, who starts as a 10/1 second favourite. Both men fully deserve their price, and both will be extremely popular in the build-up.

Fancy a play on recent form? Then DJ is your man. It’s little wonder our sports team want to keep him close, the 33-year-old from South Carolina coming out on top here 12 months ago with a winning score of -6. A poor effort, when compared to the scores of previous champions, Tiger Woods ending -15 in 2013 and Rory McIlroy doing the same the year after. With that in mind, we’re happy to continue with our strategy of picking out one at a price.

Henrik Stenson

Putting will be key to success

The man to carry our stake money this week in Akron is Henrik Stenson. Mr consistency himself. Firestone is a general all-rounders course, and the pick should shine here. 41-year-old Stenson, winner of The Open Championship last year, had his defence disrupted when the victim of a burglary while out on the course. Thieves stole jewellery, clothes and bank cards. He’ll be hoping to put that behind him and take the loot this weekend.

Driving the ball a great distance off the tee isn’t terribly important around here, but the ability to find those greens and a steady hand when using the putter will be the difference between winning and losing. There’s no doubt the two at the top of the betting are the pair to beat, but those willing to follow us in this week will get a great price about Stenson, and their stake money will be in safe hands.

Stenson a big price to succeed

Henrik hasn’t been seen in winning form for a while now, but we can be confident he has the skills to compete this weekend. Thankfully for backers, our traders seem happy enough to write him off, and there’s a chunky 25/1 going on him winning the title. Fancy a fast start? Stenson has been chalked up at 33/1 to be leading at the end of the first day.

Those needing a bit of a safety net will be delighted to see our team offer generous each-way terms of 1/4 the odds the best five players, while a top-10 finish for Stenson looks likely at 2/1. The latter is sure to appear in a share of weekend cross-sport multiples.
