Experience over youth in Open de France

Lovers of a punt on the golf are enjoying one of the most enjoyable periods in the sporting calendar, with some big events on the horizon. This week we turn our attentions to the Open de France from Le Golf Nacional in Paris.

As usual, Coral are betting on plenty of markets, aimed at giving you an interest from the first swing to the closing putt. Bet on the outright winner, first round leader and top five finish, to name just three of the options open to you. Click now to make your opinions count.

We’re happy to look past Rahm

Our traders have put their heads together and come up with John Rahm as a pre-tournament favourite, and it’s not difficult to see how they have arrived at that conclusion. The 22-year-old Spaniard goes in as the shortest price in the field, but there’s still plenty to like about his 12/1.

Thongchai Jaidee came out on top here 12 months ago. There’s little chance of him defending his honour, according to our team, with 50/1 the price currently available about two-in-a-row. The Thai rep finished 11-under last year, and started at a big price then too, so don’t be easily put off if you fancy a go. He’s not for us this week.

McDowell will enjoy the challenge

Instead we’re hot on the chances of two at a price in Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter, siding with experience over youth. The former has won this title in two of the last four years, and although that’s no guarantee he’ll go and claim it again, he has been over-priced to keep that form going. 37-year-old GMac won low-scoring affairs in 2013 and 2014, -9 and -5 respectively, but he makes plenty more appeal than most of the players ahead of him in the betting.

The challenges of this course seem to sit well with him too, and you can bomb off the tee without too much care for accuracy. McDowell is an intelligent player however, and he’s not the only man in attendance that can drive a ball, so it’ll be the work done on the greens that’ll give him a chance. The 2010 US Open winner will arrive sharp, having kept busy of late, and Coral’s 40/1 merits an interest.

Poulter

Poulter also looks worth a poke

Englishman Ian Poulter is another who appeals, especially at the odds offered. It was a surprise to see the popular Englishman written off so readily in the market, and if he goes on and wins or not, it’s always worth taking a handy player at a price that’s chunkier than you make it yourself. A value play, of course, but one certainly capable of having a say.

Poulter has spoken to the press of his desire to win the French Open, and he has certainly gone close on a couple of occasions, all without getting over the line. The field looks wide-open for this year’s renewal, and the 41-year-old travels having shown glimpses of his best golf recently. A fair helping of luck needed, but 40/1 means we can keep our stakes low. Back both each-way at 1/5 the odds the top seven places.
