The Austrian Open dominates the thinking of darts punters this week, with the action taking us from Friday’s opener through to Sunday’s climax. The rounds are split up into afternoon and evening sessions, with the quarters, semis and final all played on Sunday night.

MVG a red-hot favourite
Michael van Gerwen has been posted up as the most likely winner of this tournament, certainly according to Coral traders, with Mighty available at no more than 1/2 at the time of writing. That stance will shock no one, but the fact the Dutchman is so short may just open the door for punters to have a go at a bit of value.
There’s little doubt MVG is capable of going and winning this at a canter, but his price would suggest he’s already champion, and we know that’s not the case. Michael has been known to blow hot and cold at these smaller name tournaments. Will his heart be in it? Those who like to keep the jolly close will certainly hope so.
Wright worth a wager
Scotsman Peter Wright starts as second favourite, with the Livingston born 47-year-old yours at 7/2. Wright – one half of Scotland’s disappointing effort in the World Cup – has enjoyed a fantastic year already, that loss to Singapore aside, and Snakebite blazed a trail of glory to the final of the Premier League Darts in London, losing by a single leg to MVG.
The final score proves there’s little between the top two in the betting when both are on their game, and with that in mind, it may just be worth taking a shot at the bigger price and enjoying the show. The likes of Adrian Lewis and Michael Smith have been written off, both chalked up at 25/1.
