DJ worth taking on in Wells Fargo

The Wells Fargo Championship dominates the thinking of golf punters this week, with the action from Eagle Point Golf Club in North Carolina getting underway on Thursday. As usual, you can follow play live on Sky Sports, and Coral meet your punting needs.

Our sports traders have scratched up Dustin Johnson as market leader going into the week, and there’s certainly no doubt in their minds that DJ will be the man to come out on top here. He stands as a 5/1 jolly at present, with nearest rival Jon Rahm back at 12/1.

US Open Golf Day Four

Big price on a defence

Punters looking to stick with a bit of competition form, in an attempt to dig up some value over the course of the weekend, can have last year’s champion James Hahn, who triumphed on -9 following a play-off, at 200/1. Two in-a-row has been seriously written off, but the winning score last year was amongst the worst we’ve seen from a player banking the top cheque.

It’s difficult to make a case against Johnson, he is red-hot favourite and there’s no doubting that’s where he should be in the pecking order at the minute. The 32-year-old is, of course, world number one, and at his best he beats a field like this at a canter. But he’s just back from injury, will be stale following a period on the sidelines, and I’d want more than the price to take a chance on him being back to full fitness.

Masters Golf

Challenges should suit Simpson

Therefore, with that in mind, we go Webb Simpson to pull off an upset. The 31-year-old local lad arrives at course with reason to be confident on the back of his recent form. Not exactly setting the heather alight, he has been steadily progressive so far this year, and came agonisingly close to winning the Phoenix Open, losing in a play-off.

What attracts me most about Webb is just how familiar he will be with the challenges of this course and, in particular, the greens. Dreams will be made or broken on success with the putter in hand here, but the selection has shown plenty of times in the past that he can deal with this style. The forecast weather – wind and rain – will put a line through many of the leading names, but again we expect Simpson to cope with that fairly well.

He will need his share of luck to get back into the clubhouse in front on the final day, but Coral are handing out a tempting 33/1, and that’s well worth another look. As usual, we’re a friend to the each-way punter, giving 1/5 the odds the best seven home, while those who’d like a bit more of a safety net can get Webb for a top-10 finish at 4/1.
