Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal remains unclear, and the Frenchman was giving nothing away in a recent press conference, telling reporters that it is not completely sorted. Regulars at the Emirates could be in line for a complete summer makeover, with the contracts of a number of their big names up for renewal, including Sanchez and Ozil. Wenger moved to reassure fans that he is confident both players want to stay at the club into next season.
We have Juventus at the head of the betting to be Sanchez’s next club, with 3/1 currently doing the rounds, but the Chilean did give a cryptic clue to where his future lay, saying he wanted to stay in London and play for a club with a winning mentality. Some thought that meant a move to Chelsea – a 10/1 shot in the betting – others thought it meant staying at Arsenal under a new boss, while most believed it meant not too much at all. Don’t believe everything you read
There has been no lack of transfer rumours attached to the future of Mesut Ozil either, some just as far-fetched, plenty seeming plausible. The talented 28-year-old has done little to squash that gossip, certainly not in terms of securing his future at Arsenal, rejecting a number of offers put to him by the London club.
That uncertainly off the pitch seems to have damaged his performances on it, and he admitted recently that his form has not been good enough, but fans shouldn’t expect him to go around chasing the ball to compensate. Supporters have aimed the bulk of their fury at Wenger, but the players haven’t escaped criticism, with Ozil getting it in the neck from some sections of the stands.
That may just help make up his mind on where his future lies, but he told followers not to believe everything they read in the newspapers. Reportedly turning down double his wages, an offer thought to be in the region of £280,000-a-week, it has been written by some red tops than the club have now withdrawn the deal, accepting that he will move on. Ozil didn’t make it as cut-and-dry as that, telling fans they must not believe everything they read, as he has one year left on his contract and loves running on to the pitch for Arsenal.
So, in true English football fashion, that’s as clear as mud. Manchester United are thought to be keeping a close eye on any developments with that one, which would be a sucker-punch to Gooners. If you read between the lines, he did give a hint when telling a German newspaper that he wouldn’t rule out a move back to his homeland in future, and his family would certainly welcome it.
