Adrian Lewis odds and more from first round, day five

There have been thrillers already in the first round of the 2017 PDC World Championship, so expect more of the same arrow quality and no less darting drama on day five.

Monday sees a return to one evening session, after a decadent weekend of double session enjoyment, with two-time world champ and last year’s losing finalist Adrian Lewis headlining.

Jackpot will jostle Swedish chucker Magnus Caris. The night’s other encounters include 2016 PDC Youth World Champion Corey Cadby’s preliminary match-up with China’s Sun Qiang for the chance to face Joe Cullen, while Mervyn King tackles Steve West with Michael Smith waiting for the winner in the second round.

Qiang Sun v Corey Cadby

Monday night’s intriguing opener pits preliminary hopefuls Sun and Cadby against one another, with the young Aussie arrowsmith heavy 1/12 favourite.

Shenzhen native Sun (13/2) failed to get past this stage in the 2016 edition, when he was sunk by Dublin dartsman Mick McGowen 2-0, clinching just the one leg in his defeat. So, up-and-comer Cadby, a character on and off the oche, should fancy his 1/3 chance of whitewashing his Chinese opposition to book a first round place versus Joe Cullen.

Mervyn King v Steve West

It’s an all-English encounter for Monday’s second match, with former PDC World Championship semi-finalist and two-time BDO World Championship runner-up King 4/5 to secure safe passage to the second round by beating West (even-money).

Essex-born Simply has never appeared in this competition before since switching to the PDC in 2012, compared to The King, who is an old hand. Considering West barely made a splash in the BDO version either, never going past the last 32, King is 10/3 to ace this battle 3-2.

Adrian Lewis v Magnus Caris

Could one of the traditional World Championship shocks occur at the first hurdle here? Check out Coral’s feature on PDC darts stars’ biggest bogey opposition, and you’ll find that Lewis is set for a potential banana skin at the Ally Pally.

Swede Carius (8/1 underdog match shout) has had the better of Jackpot (1/14) in two of their three previous match-ups, including their last meet, so the Englishman should not be taking this clash lightly.

Lewis may bring the best out of his Scandinavian foe but is unlikely to fold again, in a competition that has given his career highlight moments. That doesn’t mean he can’t lose a leg or two though. There’s best value in the game going to over 3.5 sets at 5/4, or for Jackpot to prevail 3-1 (21/5).
