5 top 2016 Ryder Cup tips

The build-up is almost over as the 41st Ryder Cup gets underway on Friday at Hazeltine Golf Club.

Europe will aim to take the trophy back over the Atlantic by securing their fourth win on the spin, which they have never achieved before in the history of the competition.

All eyes will be the USA as they enter the tournament under pressure to deliver on home soil and end their losing streak.

Here, Coral give five top 2016 Ryder Cup tips on how the sides and players will fare over the three days in Minnesota…

Day one winner

USA look good to lead the way after day 1.

USA look good to lead the way after day 1.

In the States’ last victory in 2008 at Valhalla they had a great start to the competition, racing into a three-point lead. Europe were always playing catch-up and were never able to swing the momentum back in their favour as the US won with relative ease.

Given their recent history in the Ryder Cup, Davis Love III will be determined to get off to a similar start to put the pressure on Darren Clarke and his inexperienced outfit. As a result expect the US to put out their star players early in the hope of getting red on the leaderboard.

The States are backed at 19/20 to have the lead after the first day, and it seems logical that they could get out the blocks fast, especially in front of a home crowd.

Top wildcard

Kaymer loves this competition, and is a great price to be top wildcard.

Kaymer loves this competition, and is a great price to be top wildcard.

Both captains made interesting decisions with their wildcard selections, with Clarke favouring the experience of Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer as well as the form of Thomas Pieters. Meanwhile, Love III added J.B Holmes, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler and Ryan Moore – all of whom, except Moore, have played in the competition before.

All of the players have the ability to finish as the top wildcard over the three days, but one worth backing is Kaymer, who sank the winning putt in Medinah four years ago to complete Europe’s miraculous comeback.

The German has been consistent over the last couple of months, with solid performances at the PGA Championship, Olympics, Made In Denmark, Italian Open and European Open. As a result, his price of 11/2 could be a prudent bet considering his experience in the tournament.

Top combined points scorer

Depending on your point of view regarding the outcome of the tournament, there are two ways you can go – either a European or American player.

For Clarke’s men look no further than Henrik Stenson, who has been in outstanding form this year. The Swede has been struggling with a knee injury, but it will reportedly not affect his workload for the tournament.

Stenson has produced his best play in the big competitions, winning his first Major at The Open, while he also finished seventh in the PGA Championship along with a Silver medal at the Olympics. At 12/1, he gives a good chance of making punters money should he rise to the occasion again.

On the American side, there are number of good options to choose from. One player that sticks out is Zach Johnson, who has plenty of Ryder Cup experience and the ability to dominate his matches.

The 40-year-old has not been in great form this year, with his best performance in a Major coming at the US Open when he finished in tied-eighth.

Johnson is priced at 40/1 to lead scoring in the competition and, even with an average record in the Ryder Cup, the odds make him too much of an intriguing prospect to pass up.

Day three singles

Europe have made a habit of picking up most of their points on the final day.

Europe have made a habit of picking up most of their points on the final day.

All 24 players will head to the tee with butterflies in their stomach on the final day, knowing that the fate of the Ryder Cup will be decided over the course of the afternoon.

It has always provided great drama and moments for both sides, with the US enjoying their spectacular comeback in 1999 in Brookline, winning eight of the contests.

Meanwhile, Europe had the Miracle at Medinah in 2012 also winning eight matches, stunning the States captained by Love III.

Anything can happen on the final day, which makes it an interesting bet. Europe have a strong record in the singles in the last two competitions, so backing them at 13/8 to edge out the States seems a sensible option given the unpredictable super Sunday can bring.

Who will win the Ryder Cup?

Both sides have strong teams, although Clarke’s side have a lot of rookies in the line-up and how they will fare in their first taste of Ryder Cup action will dictate the outcome of the competition.

The US started six rookies in their last win in 2008 as their players rose to the occasion to defeat Nick Faldo’s men in Kentucky, while Europe had the same amount in their narrow win two years later at Celtic Manor. All eyes will be on the first-timers when they begin their rounds on Friday.

Love III was the losing captain 2012 at Medinah, so without a doubt revenge will be on his mind. His team played excellent golf for the first two days, only to be stung by a memorable comeback.

This time around he might just have enough talent to see off the Europeans and return the cup to American soil, with the hosts backed at 4/7 to triumph.
