Ascot Woodie the ace in the pack at Romford

There is some terrific Open race action from Romford tonight on Racing Post Greyhound TV tonight (Sky 468, Freesat 25) and T5 Ascot Woodie rates the standout bet in the first semi-final of the Coral Champion Stakes (20:50).

John Mullins’ veteran has been a terrific servant over the years and showed what he is capable of when getting loose on the front end in last week’s heats.

The son of Droopys Scolari produced a 13.68 sectional to flash from the traps and make all to slam Boyneviewfantasy by 5 3/4 lengths.

It was a most taking performance and Ascot Woodie once again looks nicely housed with four railers on his inside.

Another plus is that he is a strong running sort who doesn’t have to lead to win so even if his main market rival and kennelmate T1 Badabing led him up I would expect Woodie to prove to pick him up in the latter stages of the contest.

Newland Ned drawn to attack

In the second semi-final (21:06), T6 Newland Ned looks to have a peach of a draw.

Mark Fenwick’s dog has won five of his 13 starts at the track and has a 50 per cent strike rate when sporting the stripes (five wins from 10 starts).

He also ran very well to qualify in the heats when getting bumped twice before running on strongly to finish third.

Ned is also the sole wide runner in the line-up and with T5 Boyneviewfantasy likely to be cutting in at the bend looks sure gets acres of room in which to operate.

With possible crowding on the inside, the son of Definate Opinion has a great chance to turn in front and play catch me if you can.

Bog Brae worth a bet

T2 Bog Brae was comprehensively beaten by Ribble Aon when runner-up in the heats but looks cracking value to turn the tables with that rival in the third semi-final (21:24).

Paul Sallis’ son of Kinloch Brae got beat 5 1/4 lengths but Aon got an absolute flyer from T3 and is not certain to reproduce that now switched to Trap 1.

Prior to that run Bog Brae had scored impressively in a maiden over course and distance when producing a lightning 13.52 sectional to make all and beat the useful Barricane Bullet by 1/2 a length.

If getting away in similar fashion he has every chance of bossing the inside and is a tough sort to beat when getting on the bunny.

Makeit Bigtime makes plenty of appeal

In the first heat of the Champions Night Standard (20:02), T6 Makeit Bigtime looks ideally drawn to follow-up last week’s impressive success over course and distance.

Frank Gray’s charge showed bags of early pace to make all and pull clear to score by 4 1/2 lengths and as the sole wide seed in the line-up looks to have a great make-up from which to operate.

There is a distinct possibility of trouble on his inside as T3 Droopys Cambs and T5 Never Your Fault are very closely matched in the early paced stakes, and Makeit Bigtime is the ideal type to capitalise on any scrimmaging and a powerful sort once getting his head in front.

Romford best bets

20:02 T6 Makeit Bigtime
20:50 T5 Ascot Woodie (NAP)
21:06 T6 Newlawn Ned (NB)
21:24 T2 Bog Brae
