Chelsea vs Manchester United – No longer an important game

It has been a shocking year for two of the biggest clubs in English football.

Current champions Chelsea still reside in the bottom half of the table in 13th place, where they have become an almost permanent feature since the start of the season. Manchester United, on the other hand, find themselves in a much healthier position, currently occupying 5th place – 5 points behind Arsenal and 10 points behind shock league leaders Leicester City.

With the season drawing into its final 14 games a fixture that would have proved crucial just a few years ago seems rather lacklustre in comparison. Still, it remains a crucial game for Van Gaal, who, with a win here would be on the right path to mend his reputation with the Red Devils. A victory for Guus Hiddink on the other hand would most definitely break the very thin ice that his opposing manager dangerously treads.

Pato out as Hiddink looks to rest new signing

With new signing Alexander Pato still not match fit, it looks like Chelsea will be sticking with main man Diego Costa, who, unlike the season before, has been rather unremarkable this season; only finding the net 8 times over the course of the year Chelsea’s main man will have to step it up this Sunday to make any ground.

Van Gaal is hoping that Rooney can maintain his recent form – with only 7 goals this season though, Rooney, like Costa, is struggling to find the back of the net this season. With both teams struggling to score, this could be a very dull game indeed.
