James Wade
After what has admittedly been a mixed calendar career year for Wade, The Machine is well overdue another major and has been quietly cranking through the gears.
Having reached two finals in 2015, knocking out Phil Taylor in his favoured World Matchplay in the semi-finals and dispatching world number one Michael van Gerwen at the same stage of the Perth Darts Masters, another big scalp looks to be more a matter of when not if.
At 25/1 for the World Championship title Wade is certainly worth a flutter, as he has reached the semi-finals on three occasions before, and this year of revival could see the final push. A favourable draw should also see The Machine reach the quarter-finals before facing any other prominent household names.
Dave Chisnall
Chizzy also looks tasty value at 28/1, as the affable arrowsmith needs to crack on and claim a major PDC event, after the St Helen’s star excelled to reach the semi-finals of the Premier League earlier this year.
Yet to truly follow that up, the talent is there for all to see, as Chisnall recently pulled a stunning nine-darter out of the bag, his first on TV, at the recent Grand Prix of Darts. Capable of anything on his day, Chizzy is an outsider always worth a punt.
Raymond van Barneveld
Barney’s Army have been through the mill recently, with the Dutch legend’s delirious ups and downs. Yet, veteran Van Barneveld can dust himself off for the biggest of stages and make an impact, as his finishing is still among the very best. There’s still a glimpse of the tiger in this tungsten hero’s eye yet.
At a fantastic 50/1, backing former world champion Barney as an outside shout looks a no-brainer, as the elite arrowsmith has shown he still has x-factor in abundance, with recent semi-final finishes at the Grand Slam and Auckland Darts Masters under his belt hinting at a build-up to a big win.
Michael Smith
Our choice from a gaggle of young pretenders, Smith has been mixing it with the cream of the crop and upsetting his fair share of apple carts this year.
This is reflected in his odds of 50/1 to pluck the World Championship trophy, placing Bully Boy, also a Grand Slam semi-finalist, on the same price pedestal as Barney.
Keegan Brown
Despite showing just as much future promise as Smith, Brown does not have the same appearances at business ends of tournaments to bolster his case, but has gone toe-to-toe with the game’s giants and come off best before.
At 250/1, up and comer Brown is a true outsider, but he is also bursting with potential. Just ask Adrian Lewis, The Needle’s most recent scalp in the last 16 of the first World Series of Darts Finals, who does not appear to relish facing this young Englishman.
