Coral’s 2016 PDC World Darts Championship top five betting tips
Sam Barnard, Assistant Sports Editor | December 15, 2015
Not long to go now until the 2016 PDC World Darts Championship at the famous Alexandra Palace this festive period, so why not take a punt or two to make your viewing of the event all the more exiting?
Coral writers have gone through the tournament specials markets to find five top bets to take, and below are reasons why they are not to be missed…
Tournament-winning double is 20
In the 22 previous PDC World Championships, 20 and 16 top the tournament-winning doubles at five apiece, two ahead of the next most popular 12.
However, all five double 16s have been achieved by Phil Taylor and, with the all-time great on the decline and unlikely to be world champ again, double 20 stands out at a tempting price of 3/1.
Double tops also happens to be favoured by both left and right-handers, has been the tournament-winning throw in two of the last four tournaments and five different stars have hit it to claim the trophy.
Exactly one nine-dart finish
A total of eight perfect legs have be thrown at the PDC World Championship, and all of them have happened in the last nine years.
Going by that rate, take tempting odds of 6/4 for exactly one to be thrown this year, the same amount as in the 2015 edition when Adrian Lewis got a nine-darter in his last 16 loss to Raymond van Barneveld.
James Wade wins 3rd quarter
Besides title holder Gary Anderson, there are no real threats to Wade winning the third quarter of the Ally Pally competition this year (3/1 to do so), with the likes of Jamie Lewis, Vincent van der Voort, Brendan Dolan and Simon Whitlock being other seeds.
The Flying Scotsman has not been in great form since claiming the Premier League Darts title too in the summer, while eight-time major winner The Machine has looked back to his best.
Total 170 checkouts is 3-4
The sport of darts is ever-improving ever since Taylor set a huge benchmark. A total of three maximum checkouts were thrown last year, while three of the last five tournaments have seen 3-4.
Odds of 13/8, therefore, look highly tempting to take in this ultra competitive year-ending and beginning festive event in front of an expectant crowd.
Michael Smith exits in quarters
Former World Youth Championship winner Smith is one of the next big things in darts, and has had his best year to date, having reached the semis of the Grand Slam of Darts.
Unfortunately for Bully Boy, he has been drawn in the same quarter as the dominant world number one Michael van Gerwen this year, but should be able to beat potential opponents Steve Beaton, Ian White and Benito van de Pas before then.
So, at 9/4, he is well priced to exit at the quarter-final stage, where he is scheduled to meet Mighty Mike.
