Glasgow hosts inaugural World Series of Darts Finals

Scotland’s second city is the stage on which the World Series of Darts Finals is launched, with this tournament excitingly the first edition, as tungsten superstars gather in Glasgow to try something new.

This maiden competition is part of the PDC’s 2015 Pro Tour, featuring the top eight oche arrowsmiths from the five World Series of Darts events, encompassing Dubai, Japan, Perth, Sydney and Auckland, to have taken place this calendar year.

A qualifying event in Coventry plus four of the next highest ranked players from the PDC’s ProTour Order of Merit make up the rest of this top quality contingent, and will contest the first round, with the top eight joining in the second.

So, Coral oche experts preview the upcoming action, set to take place this weekend from November 21st-22nd. Can recent European Championship and Grand Slam of Darts champion Michael van Gerwen grab another title in Glasgow?

Unplayable Van Gerwen to make it three on the trot?

Fresh on the back of a formidable run, which has seen Michael van Gerwen magnificently claim two televised crowns on the trot, Mighty Mike is undoubtedly the fancied favourite at 6/4 to make it a formidable third in a row.

The defiant Dutch dartsman and world number one will undoubtedly thrive on the challenge of being first to bag this trophy, and is set to face one of foes Robert Thornton or Devon Petersen, who square-up before in one of the opening clashes.

Van Gerwen is a daunting darts giant waiting in the wings for this pair, and could relish the chance to tackle The Thorn again after his English opponent shockingly beat him to the World Grand Prix back in early October. Though, later on in the competition, Mighty Mike’s half of the draw may see him pitted against a revived Raymond van Barneveld, meaning his path to the grand finale is not so smooth.

Meanwhile, darting great and fellow Grand Slam of Darts finalist Phil Taylor is an 11/4 chance to take this title, having excelled in the Masters Series in 2015, with wins in Japan, Sydney and Perth.

Scot stars Anderson and Wright have home advantage

Of course there are plenty of other promising punts to be taken for another World Series star to upset Mighty Mike’s rampant winning rhythm.

Home hopes Gary Anderson and Peter Wright have both been threatening to bag a big tournament of late and are immensely popular on Scottish soil, which could potentially tip any tie in their favour.

The Flying Scotsman is still world champion but, before defending that title across December and January, will be eager to enhance his reputation, which has flagged slightly lately, with a victory in front of home fans. You can back Anderson, overdue for some silverware, at 5/1 to be king of Glasgow.

Speaking ahead of his homecoming, Anderson said: “You just sense everyone is now seeing the big events of the season looming large and standards are cranking up.

“But the Scottish boys will also have the World Series in mind because it’s going to be amazing to go home.”

Another of those superb Scottish boys will be Snakebite, who could meet one of German up-and-comer Max Hopp or Belgian Dimitri van den Bergh, when he joins in the second round.

Quirky Wright will no doubt entertain on Scottish soil, and is 10/1 to bounce back and win in style after disappointingly being ousted from the Grand Slam of Darts last time out by Adrian Lewis.
