The Grand Slam of Darts is now upon us, and the opening afternoon session served up shocks, whitewashes and incredibly unlucky moments to give fans a real thrill.

All the first day competitors from Groups E-H such as Gary Anderson, Phil Taylor, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld return to the Wolverhampton oche, with tournament official betting partners Coral previewing the action below…

Keegan Brown v Michel van der Horst (F)
As stated above, Brown was cruelly denied the chance to put up a decent challenge against Webster, despite only losing 5-3 in the end, after multiple high-scoring darts fell out.
Whether it was the board or his throwing action, Armageddon needs to put that disappointment behind him when he faces Dutchman The Invisible Man (15/8), who he is odds-on at 2/5 to beat.
Rowby-John Rodriguez v Martin Phillips (H)
Veteran Phillips really didn’t turn up for his first battle with Taylor in 23 years, but goes up against fellow loser Rodriguez.
Austrian Little John (even-money), who is 34 years younger than the Welshman (4/5 odds-on favourite), should have enough quality to beat the long-term BDO player.
Andy Boulton v Larry Butler (E)
At 58 years of age, 1994 World Matchplay champion Butler is no doubt past his best and couldn’t bet on the scoreboard against Anderson.
Perhaps it was an unfair start for the American Bald Eagle (8/11), and he now has the chance to win when he faces Boulton (11/10), who was also whitewashed in his opener against a rampant Barney.
Terry Jenkins v Geert de Vos (G)
Opening day losers Jenkins and De Vos must beat the other in order to really stand a chance of making it through to the knockout stages.
Jenkins (8/15) and De Vos (6/4) were defeated by respective opponents Clayton and Thornton, back back 2008 runner-up The Bull to show his class and come through this clash.
Robert Thornton v Jonny Clayton (G)
Welshman Clayton (9/4) caused perhaps the shock of the afternoon session, as he toppled the evergreen Jenkins 5-3, but can he go one better and beat recent World Grand Prix winner Thornton (1/3)?
The Thorn only just edged BDO Belgian De Vos last time out 5-4, though should be able to see off PDC qualifier Clayton.
Phil Taylor v Robbie Green (H)
This is the remaining major title that Taylor holds and he will do all he can to ensure he keeps hold of it. After a 5-0 thrashing of fellow 55-year-old Phillips in his first match, he certainly showed he is fired up.

The Power (1/5) now goes up against Green (7/2), who was impressive in his opener against Rodriguez, and is now 11/4 to go on and lift his third straight Grand Slam trophy.
James Wade v Mark Webster (F)
Left-hander Webster was very lucky to have been handed such an easy opening win, with Brown’s darts simply not sticking.

The Welshman (7/4) really won’t mind how he won, but now goes up against The Machine (4/9) who he hasn’t beaten in the last five attempts. Wade is a tempting 4/1 chance to triumph 5-3.
Gary Anderson v Raymond van Barneveld (E)
By far the battle of the Sunday afternoon session, current and five-time world champions Anderson and Barney respectively go head-to-head after gaining opening 5-0 whitewashes.
Van Barneveld (7/4) may have slipped down the rankings but has stated his desire to rapidly rise once more and is a tempting shout to defeat the Scotsman (4/9). This could go all the way, and the Dutchman is priced at 13/2 to claim a confident-boosting 5-4 victory.
