Blackburn Rovers have sacked boss Gary Bowyer around two-and-a-half years after his permanent appointment at Ewood Park.

The Championship club have won one of their last six matches, and averaged just 17 points from 16 games so far.

Former Rovers academy boss Bowyer, 44, had two caretaker spells in charge before being given the reins permanently in May 2013.

Blackburn have seen better days

Winning 47 of his 131 games across three spells at the helm gives Bowyer a 34.75 per cent success rate, but the Lancashire outfit are languishing in mid-table mediocrity and averaging under a goal per game.

Blackburn are just 11 points off the top six, however, and hold odds of 8/1 with Coral to finish the season in at least a play-off position.

“The Owners [Venky’s] felt that following a disappointing start to the season, they have to act in order to give the club the best chance of success in the remainder of the campaign,” an official Rovers statement read.

Bowyer’s backroom get boot too

Blackburn have also axed Bowyer’s backroom staff of assistant manager Terry McPhillips, first team coaches Craig Short and Tony Grant, and goalkeeping coach John Keeley.

Rovers sold one of their two star strikers in Rudy Gestede to Aston Villa this summer and, despite retaining eight-goal top scorer Jordan Rhodes, there has been no sign of a promotion bid.

Bowyer’s dismissal follows Fulham firing Kit Symons and west London rivals QPR sacking Chris Ramsey during the previous week.

Sherwood in Rovers’ sights?

Recently axed Villa boss Tim Sherwood, Blackburn captain during their Premier League title triumph in 1994/95, will inevitably be linked with the Ewood Park hotseat now it has become vacant.

His Villans predecessor Paul Lambert, who got Norwich City promoted from the Championship, and David Moyes, sacked by Real Sociedad the day before Bowyer, are also very early candidates.

Rovers are seeking their seventh permanent managerial appointment since current Stoke City boss Mark Hughes’ close to four-year reign ended in June 2008, when Manchester City came in for his services.
