Ahead of Tottenham and Arsenal’s Capital One Cup third round tie, Coral football writers have found five other crunch cup clashes between the north London giants in the modern era.
The Gunners (11/8 away favourites with Coral to win in 90 minutes) boast an 11-5 record over Spurs (9/5) from FA Cup and League Cup meetings in history, but have to travel the short distance to White Hart Lane on Wednesday, September 23rd.
(2010/11) League Cup third round: Tottenham 1-4 Arsenal
Arsene Wenger had a habit of playing youngsters or fringe players in the League Cup in the past, and his second string side took Spurs to extra time thanks to Henri Lansbury’s opener before Robbie Keane’s equaliser.
While the scores were level in normal time, the visitors turned on the stye to run out 4-1 winners, with Samir Nasri netting two penalties and substitute Andrey Arshavin getting a late fourth. You can back Arsenal to win by that same scoreline at 40/1 in 90 minutes this time.
(2007/08) League Cup semi-final second leg: Tottenham 5-1 Arsenal
Just three seasons before the above drubbing, Spurs went one better by smashing their bitter rivals 5-1 after drawing at the Emirates 1-1, to reach the final and eventual lift the title.
The victory was all the more sweeter, as the Gunners won both Premier League fixtures earlier that season.
(2006/07) League Cup semi-final second leg: Arsenal 3–1 Tottenham
These two sides met in the semis the previous campaign too, with Arsenal reaching the final after triumphing 5-3 on aggregate, although they eventually lost to Chelsea.
The second leg had to go to extra-time as well, but Jeremie Aliadiere and a Pascal Chimbonda own-goal saw them through. A draw after 90 minutes again is priced at 9/4.
(2000/01) FA Cup semi-final: Arsenal 2–1 Tottenham
These two teams have had their fair share of domestic cup semi-finals in the past, and this one on neutral ground at Old Trafford saw Gunners legends Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires cancel out Gary Doherty’s opener.
However, Arsenal were unable to lift the FA Cup, losing out to Liverpool at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
(1992/93) FA Cup semi-final: Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham
Another semi-final and another Gunners victory. This time, legendary clubman Tony Adams got the winner after heading home late on from a Paul Merson free-kick.
Arsenal went on to win the FA Cup, to add to their League Cup triumph earlier in the season too.
