Bournemouth break transfer record for Ipswich defender Tyrone Mings

Bournemouth, 7/1 shots with Coral to break into the top 10 in their maiden Premier League season, have smashed their record transfer by paying a reported £8m for highly-rated Ipswich Town defender Tyrone Mings.

The 22-year-old has penned an four-year contract with the Cherries, and Eddie Howe getting his signature is something of a coup as Mings was previously linked with Arsenal and Crystal Palace. Bournemouth’s previous record fee was the £3m they paid Coventry City for striker Callum Wilson last summer.

A standout performer among Tractor Boys boss Mick McCarthy’s shoestring budget squad that punched above their weight at Portman Road by reaching the Championship play-offs, £10k bargain signing Mings will get a crack at top-flight football after beginning his career in non-league.

“I’m looking forward to learning from the manager’s ideas,” Mings said. “They will be different to what I’m used to but that can only be a good thing. I’m here to develop and learn as much as possible.

“The team’s style was different to anyone else’s in the league. That probably goes back to how in-depth the manager is with everything he does and the group of players he has.

“They can pull off what he wants them to do – they are well organised and play good football as everyone saw last season.

“The manager has spoken to me about it and it may be a culture shock to what I was used to.

“It (Ipswich’s style) wasn’t as easy on the eye I guess, but I worked over 46 games and got Ipswich into the play-offs.

“To learn off Eddie and Jason though is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Cherries coach Howe has now lined up six summer signings at Dean Court, including the permanent capture of on-loan Southampton stopper Artur Boruc. Defensive areas have been a focus of Bournemouth’s recruitment thus far with Reading goalie Adam Federici and Premier League veteran Sylvain Distin also set to be added.

Mings will compete with the former Everton, Portsmouth and Manchester City man, as both can play centre half and at left back. The Cherries released ex-Republic of Ireland international Ian Harte, however, so it is the latter berth they were looking to strengthen.

Reports also say Scotland Under-21 international right winger Ryan Fraser is set to go the other way from Bournemouth to Ipswich on a season-long loan to boost McCarthy’s attacking options.

Cherries striker Brett Pitman is also to join the Tractor Boys permanently for an undisclosed fee.
