Cycling the track to take

The sport of cycling, be it time trials or pursuit, on road or around a velodrome track, has seen its profile raised massively in recent years by Olympic success for British athletes. The likes of Victoria Pendleton, Sir Chris Hoy and Chris Froome have set the bar so high and yet inspired a generation to come. Although not without its controversies, the most high-profile of which resulted in bans for Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador, the centrepiece of cycling remains the gruelling Tour de France that takes place ever summer. Prior to that, however, London plays host to the World Track Cycling Championships in early March. Watch out for the two-day Tour de Yorkshire at the end of April too, with this year’s route made up of legs between market towns Beverley and Settle, and then Otley to Doncaster. In May, the Giro d’Italia dominates the cycling month, taking in a picturesque tour of the Alps, ending up in Turin. From July 2nd to 24th, the Tour de France crowns the campaign and victorious riders will cycle down Paris’ icon Champs-Elysees at the end of another gruelling 21 stages, having taken in Montpellier and Mont Blanc en route. The Grand Tours of Europe continue with the Vuelta a Espana on from August 20th to September 11th. This event in Iberia overlaps with the Aviva Tour of Britain, which is on for a week from September 4th. How will Team Sky fare at several of these multi-stage road races? Let’s not forget the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with Fort Copacabana due to host the road race cycling, the Pontal Peninsula taking in the time trial, and a special velodrome to be built in the Brazilian coastal port and carnival cultural hotspot.
