Leading contenders in the women’s Australian Open odds 2023
One of the early highlights of the sporting year is the Australian Open as we preview the women’s singles tournament which begins on Monday.
Ahead of the action getting under way in Melbourne we assess the chances of the leading contenders in the women’s Australian Open odds, while we have also previewed the 2023 men’s singles.
Iga Swiatek
The 21-year-old Pole established herself as the best player in the women’s game last year when she won two grand slams plus six other tournaments.
Her French Open success was no surprise given she also triumphed at Roland Garros in 2020 but her first US Open title proved she can also dominate on hard courts.
Given she also reached the semi-finals in Melbourne 12 months ago, Swiatek is undoubtedly the one to beat this time around and is a worthy favourite at 7/4 in the women’s Australian Open odds.
She lost 6-2 6-2 to Jessica Pegula while playing for Poland at the United Cup in Sydney at the weekend though and broke down in tears because she “felt kind of helpless”.
Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka has never won a grand slam but she beat Swiatek on her way to reaching the WTA Finals decider, only to then lose to Caroline Garcia.
She has reached the semi-finals of a grand slam on three occasions, most recently at the US Open when she lost to Swiatek, so is capable of going deep in the tournament.
It was her serve which let her down too often in 2022 but the Belarusian has worked hard to fix the problem.
Winning the Adelaide International will have boosted her confidence and her women’s Australian Open odds have been cut from 12/1 to 9/1.
Jessica Pegula
Pegula is the American number one but does not have the same profile as some of her compatriots who have gone before her and she is still very much a player under the radar despite climbing to third in the world rankings.
She reached three grand slam quarter-finals in 2022 but is yet to go further and was 16/1 when we first looked at the women’s Australian Open odds before Christmas.
The 28-year-old, whose family own the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, has been cut to 10/1 now though, helped by the aforementioned victory over Swiatek.
Caroline Garcia
If Swiatek does slip up then several players will be hoping to take advantage by winning a maiden grand slam title and one of them is Garcia.
The Frenchwoman ended 2022 on a high with victory at the WTA Finals to complete an impressive season in which she also triumphed at the Western & Southern Open.
She reached a grand slam semi-final for the first time at the US Open in September and is now ranked fourth in the world so winning one of the sport’s top prizes is the next goal and she is 11/1 in the outright women’s Australian Open betting.
Cori Gauff
Gauff is another player who looks a grand slam champion in the making and aged just 18, she has plenty of time on her side.
She was runner-up at the French Open in May and is up to seventh in the world rankings with more improvement expected in 2023.
Gauff warmed up for the Australian Open by claiming her third career title as she won the ASB Classic in Auckland without dropping a set all week and she has been trimmed to 12/1.
Ons Jabeur
Jabeur has gone close to breaking her grand slam duck and would be a popular champion if she could oblige at 14/1.
She reached the final at Wimbledon 2022 and took the opening set before losing to Elena Rybakina, while she also made it to the US Open showpiece but lost to Swiatek.
The Tunisian has not been as successful at the Australian Open though. The best she has managed in Melbourne is a run to the quarter-finals in 2020, having pulled out last year with a back injury.
Emma Raducanu
Unlike many of the leading women’s Australian Open favourites, Raducanu already has a grand slam to her name after sensationally winning the 2021 US Open.
Not much has gone right since then though and she has slipped to 75th in the world rankings, with injury problems not helping. She has failed to win a tournament since her US Open triumph and has changed coaches on a regular basis.
The British number one started her season with an impressive victory over Linda Fruhvirtova last week but then rolled her left ankle during her second-round match and had to withdraw. Faces a race against time to be fit and is out to 20/1.
Best of the rest
Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is an interesting option at 20/1 after showing she has the nerve to win a grand slam.
World number six Maria Sakkari and 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejicova are also priced at 20/1 while last year’s runner-up Danielle Collins, who thrashed Swiatek in the semi-finals, is 28/1.
